We had the good fortune of connecting with Gaelle Karene Petit-Fond and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gaelle Karene, how do you think about risk?
The genesis of my business idea traces back to my mother, who served as a significant source of inspiration from my early years. Observing her actions, she imparted valuable knowledge, becoming my guide in understanding the intricacies of the trade. Witnessing her involvement in selling wholesale food products, I noted that she was procuring them at a high cost from well-established competitors. The challenges were compounded by the hefty expenses associated with shipping products from the United States to Guadeloupe, a specific location in the Caribbean.
Motivated by these observations, I embarked on extensive research, even traveling to the region where jasmine rice is cultivated. Once I conceptualized the idea, I eagerly shared it with my mother. The prospect of embarking on this entrepreneurial journey together filled me with excitement, envisioning our joint efforts propelling us to become the premier rice brand in the islands.
What should our readers know about your business?
Honestly, I embody the concept of hitting rock bottom and rising again. Before venturing into business, I faced the belief that I might never walk again, plunging into a profound depression that seemed insurmountable. The support of my mother, my second mother Telene (whom I lost in early 2023), family, close friends, and, crucially, the practice of journaling played pivotal roles in my recovery. This journey taught me the value of appreciating life and time and instilled a profound belief in my aspirations.
The foundation for my current position was laid at the age of 8 through experiences shared with my mother. Daily challenges persist, but my approach is to focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on the problems. I want to convey that launching a business is undeniably challenging, requiring eagerness, willingness, drive, a positive mindset, and perseverance. The road won’t be easy, but giving up is never an option.
A piece of advice from my late aunt, given before her passing, resonates deeply: “When the sky is gray, it’s okay; it’s going to be sunny very soon.” My business is a growing family enterprise, proudly standing as the only Haitian female-owned rice company.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To kick off the day, I’d treat my friend to a luxurious spa experience, setting the tone for a relaxing and enjoyable time. Following that, we would head to a charming restaurant in the Wynwood area, ideally situated on the water and emanating the vibrant atmosphere of Mexico.
In the afternoon, we would indulge in my passion for horse riding. Growing up, I immersed myself in racing and riding horses, and to this day, I make it a priority to continue this cherished activity. The thrill and connection with these majestic animals make for a perfect way to spend the afternoon.
As the day unfolds, I’d take my friend to explore various malls, providing them with a glimpse of the diverse shopping experiences. Additionally, we might venture to different museums, or perhaps embark on a safari or visit the zoo for some enriching sightseeing. This eclectic mix of activities ensures a day filled with relaxation, adventure, and cultural exploration.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wish to acknowledge and give recognition to my mother.
