We had the good fortune of connecting with Gustavo Briceno and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gustavo, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been creatively inclined and pursued a career following my passions. As kid my first passion was music, so I chased a career as an audio engineer to work in the music industry. This opened up a door for me to work in TV and Film industry doing audio and sound design work in the post production industry for over 15 years. Unfortunately it is an industry that is mostly non existent in Miami, you would really need to move to a place like LA in order to grow, and it just seemed like a move wasn’t in the cards for me. I still managed to do very well here in Miami and worked in a lot of high profile projects and managed to keep busy. However I was feeling like there was no longer any room to grow in this market.
About 5 years ago, me and my wife were looking to buy our first home and I got obsessed at looking at houses online. We ended up purchasing a townhouse in pre-construction, and through that process I discovered my passion for design, materials and architecture.
One day my wife asked me if she could buy a camera to take pictures of her artworks, and as I tend to do every time I’m going to make a significant purchase, I researched all I could about cameras in order to make an informed decision. Little did I know that this camera purchase, would lead me to a new passion and career.
I spent the last 5 years working in a studio for a non-profit organization and we were shooting a lot of content, so I first started to dip my toes into editing and got really good at it, turns out a lot of the skills from editing audio would easily to video editing. Eventually I started shooting interviews as the opportunities presented itself and that helped me get really comfortable with the camera.
I got the idea for shooting houses about 2-3 years ago. I would spend a lot of time watching house tours online, so I knew that’s what I wanted to do, and that I would eventually launch my own business doing just that. So I spent those years learning everything I could, and saving money to acquire all the gear I would need. Eventually, that’s how Real Cinema Productions was born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think my attention to details is perhaps what sets me apart from others. I have spent a lot of time working in the advertisement industry, where they obsess over every little detail of a 30 second commercial, and spend weeks just in the edit. So that’s the mentality that I approach every job with, I may spend more time taking each shot and making sure everything perfect, but in the end it just makes for a better product.
There’s a law of diminishing returns that applies to every shot. The effort needed to get from 93% perfect shot to a 98% is many times more than the effort needed to get from 80% to 90%. A lot of photographers will stop at the 80%-90% mark, but I always push to get a little bit more.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re visiting Miami of course you gotta hit the beach. One of my favorite places to go to the beach is at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne. The beach is not as crowded as South Beach. Another fun activity is to rent a kayak or paddle board at Dinner Key marina in Coconut Grove, and have bring a picnic to picnic island.
The Frost Museum is worth checking even you don’t have kids, and then you can spend the day at museum park and admire the art installations and some of the most beautiful views of the city’s architecture. Right down from there you can enjoy Bayfront Park and go on the Ferris wheel.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife. Her encouragement, unconditional support and her belief in me, is what gave me the guts to risk everything starting a new business.
