We had the good fortune of connecting with Gwendolyn Boggess and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gwendolyn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I previously booth rented which is very similar to running your own business . From buying my own product to making my own schedule . I’ve always been motivated to make money doing something I love .

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started out as a shampoo girl here in key largo from learning everything there it motivated me to go to beauty school . I waited tables and bartended during that time and on my days off I would practice on anyone that would let me in my kitchen or traveling to their home . I’m so grateful people believed in me . I still have clients sticking by myside throughout all these years . I knew I could make it down here in the keys from my experience dealing with the public and food you really have to know how to talk to people and handle some not so fun situations . I have always hustled for a better life . I moved back home from arkansas and my client’s welcomed me back with open arms . After working at a local salon for a year I knew I was ready to go out on my own . It took everything I had saved and some but I did it and now I have a beautiful spot to make others feel amazing . I have done a lot of fun colors and I’ve been told numerous times that I make people feel like mermaids so that is where mermaids mane beauty bar came in . With the help of my client’s, family and friends support I am busy and steady with return client’s that can’t wait to unwind in my chair . Their smile and happiness is really what does it for me .

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First stop would be buzzards roost . It is a local gem . The food is amazing and so are the views . Then I would recommend doing a sandbar trip with islander girl Snorkel tours ! It’s perfect for having a couple of drinks on the water . You can lounge on floats or Snorkel and for dinner I would recommend old tavernier their oyster Rockefeller is to die for !

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Clay really supported me throughout beauty school to setting up my booth and now he is my best supporter here in my salon . He has worked effortlessly between painting , building and helping me create a safe space for my client’s. He really believed in me when I struggled believing in myself .
