We had the good fortune of connecting with Helen Blondel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Helen, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Singing has always been my passion since I was in elementary school. The arts was and still is the rawest form of expression. As I eventually learned belly dance, my goal is to mix my passion for singing and dance together through my music.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Growing up immersed in music from all corners of the globe, my goal has always been to weave my multicultural influences into my songwriting. I’m really excited to share my recent singles, “Again,” “Eclipse,” and one of my personal favs thus far, “Ay Ay Ay,” a song which I crafted not only to reach my audience on a personal level but also as a song they can belly dance to.
Getting to where I am professionally was not easy and every day I continue to learn something new. As an artist there’s always room to learn no matter where you are in your journey. I write all my music alone and my biggest challenge with songwriting is when I get writers’ block. The way I overcome this challenge is by stepping away from my pen and paper, indulging in some other type of creative art, such as belly dancing, singing covers, or taking a well-needed rest and returning back to it when I feel inspired. The best ideas come to us as artists when they come naturally, not forced.
I’ve also learned the importance of resilience, discipline, and consistency. This career is not a 9-5 job. You don’t have a set schedule made for you and no one’s going to hold you accountable if you’re late to your own tasks. You’re really your own boss and have to take care of your stuff come rain or come shine. Sometimes you’re not going to feel like making the social media video. Sometimes you’re not going to feel like reaching out to leads. However, when it gets hard and you least want to work, that’s when you have to do so. Discipline is what sets people who wish for something, from the people who actually achieve it!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hookita Lounge is a fun spot in Miami where you can enjoy quality hookah & drinks as well as food, in a chill and nice atmosphere. There’s often activities like board games, karaoke, & special events.
Macondo is another great place to go to. They have lots of food options as well as coffee/espresso options & is the perfect cafe to bring your laptop to do your work on, read, or have a meeting/study group. There is sometimes live entertainment there as well.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to some of my favorite authors, Robert Greene, John C. Maxwell, & Ryan Holiday. Their books have helped me in the times that I’ve doubted myself and didn’t know where to start in the realm of emerging on my career as an independent artist.
