We had the good fortune of connecting with Holly Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Holly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Well, when I started my business, it was during the pandemic. I had a bunch of free time, and a typewriter handy, so I brainstormed ways I could use it. I’m studying creative writing at my university and thought it would be such a good idea to create a business around my passion for writing. So, I decided to sell poetry and try to get my writing out there. I started on Twitter, and it went up from there. I really wanted people from all over the world to connect with my work, and because of social media, there was a bunch of people that did!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
In my business “Holly’s Typewriter Poetry”, I write poetry on my typewriter based on any idea a person gives me. The ideas range from one word to a whole life story. I think what sets me apart from others is the level of vulnerability it takes to run this business. I’ve always struggled with being vulnerable, and this business has helped a lot with that. In my writing and in conversations with complete strangers, I’ve never been so vulnerable before, and exchanging this energy with someone is so beautiful. I am most proud of my ability to juggle this business with everything else in my life. It can be difficult at times juggling this business, academics, and other jobs of mine, but I do it! And I am pretty proud of myself! I wouldn’t say it was easy getting to this place with my business, but I believe writing for people is my purpose in life. I believe my words are something people can relate to and connect with. That’s what I learned throughout this journey, and because of maintaining that mindset, I am here.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmmm. Well, I love going to thrift and antique stores, so I would definitely take my best friend to all the good stores I know. I also love sushi, so maybe we would go to an all you can eat sushi place. I live by the beach, and I feel like a good solid walk on the beach during sunset would be a fun time. My city’s downtown area is so much fun, so maybe down there too! I love supporting small businesses, so we would absolutely go and support some small businesses in the downtown area.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my parents and to my friends. Thank you mom and dad for supporting my writing career and even coming with me to New York for an event. Their support is everything. Also, thank you to my friends who always hype me up about my business and come with me to my local art markets. Having supportive and loving people in your life make a difference.
