We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Abigail and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Haha, I battle this daily! There can be weeks where I do not have a sessions, and I start to have imposter syndrome, and then the Lord reminds me of patience, to wait on Him, and He will give me back to back weeks of sessions.
I am usually someone who gives up when things aren’t happening fast. But consistency and persistence is what builds success. Keep going and the fruits of my labor will prevail.
If you give up to soon, it will leave you to wonder what would have happened if you continued. I don’t want to be left wondering.
My advice for any creative. Do not let social media be the bar whether to keep going or to quit. Don’t let social media rush the calling God has on your life. Keep going.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe what sets me apart from others is my personality. I love God’s people. My clients become friends! I love ensuring that your session is something you remember with your significant other/family.
I am most excited about weddings! It is my favorite thing to see couples say “I do”. Marriage has been frowned upon from our generation, and I love seeing people take it seriously. Marriage is cool. Marriage is fun! Marriage is beautiful! I am most proud of seeing connections and being a witness of it.
I got here by telling myself everyday I can do it, and literally preparing myself, and just did it. I have learned that there’s going to be clients that are not a good fit and to not take it personally. Not everyone can budget for what I do, and to believe in my worth.
I want the world to know that I am a chocolate photographer in this type of field photography, lol, and I am here to stay. You normally don’t see girls of melanin doing the style of photography that I do. I want people to know that I love Jesus, and I highlight every skin well in my shoots. When you hire me, you hire a memory keeper. You will remember the moment while being in the moment. When you receive your gallery from me, you will love the moment and cherish it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Girlllll, let’s go!
We would shop in Worth Ave
We would eat in Fort Lauderdale
We would visit Miami
We would hang out in mi casa
The most exciting place to check out is Worth Ave. The scenery is beautiful and you get to see a different part of Florida
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my husband – Mikhal
He is my support, my best friend, my encourager, and helper.
What people don’t see as much is him holding my phone to take behind the scenes shots. Because strangers pay me to meet up with them to take pictures, haha, my husband is my bodyguard. On long wedding days, when I am too tired to drive back home, he is my chauffeur. When I am crying because I don’t know if I will make enough to provide for us and our family, he is there holding me, and praying with me, When I become burnt out, he is there taking care of me. When I don’t feel like standing up and going, sometimes quitting, he is there encouraging me.
I do this for us, my family. I couldn’t do this without my husband Mikhal being by my side.
