We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaquelyn Puma and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaquelyn, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Investing in myself and my career was a very important decision I made. From buying a website to getting a better machine I invested in my business and believed I’d get better in return. It was a huge leap of faith and I don’t regret it. I still do that today to make sure I’m getting the best products to give my client the best art/result possible. I think spending what you need on yourself is really important.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Jaquelyn Puma, aka JPUMA, has been cultivating her artistic passion and painting and drawing art since as young as 5. She is an artist who delves into her intricate inner world through her artistry. Originally from the outskirts of New York City, graduated from an all-girls high school before pursuing studies at Pratt, FIT, and Pace University, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a minor in Fashion. Her artistic journey spans a diverse range of mediums, including graphite, block print, acrylic, watercolor, India ink, pastel, charcoal, colored pencil, spray paint, and marker.
After relocating to Fort Lauderdale, Jaquelyn launched her career in modeling and freelance art, focusing initially on murals. Following an apprenticeship, she officially ventured into the tattoo industry in 2019, swiftly establishing herself as a sought-after artist renowned for her distinctive style and profound ability.
It was not easy to get to where I am now and the hardest part was believing in myself when nobody else did.
A challenge I face is constantly being inspired. I find that to be the hardest thing. Taking trips keeps me inspired and opens my eyes to new things.
A lesson I’ve learned is that you need to be aligned with your work and pace yourself. I make sure I have everything I need and know that everything is ready before I get started on a tattoo or a pieced of art. It’s better to work smarter, not harder. It’s hard to time manage when you work for yourself but you need to give yourself time to rest and recharge.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d definitely go to some of my favorite pools like the one at The W or go to a yacht party. I love to walk around Las Olas! Then we’d go to Nubé Rooftop Lounge and shop at Koosh Jewelers. We’d end the night with a walk on the beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this to my mom. I wouldn’t be where I am now without her.
