We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarvis Lawhorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jarvis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business came from me being passionate about weddings and events. When I looked around the industry I didn’t see many people of color that were hugely successful or that even worked in this industry. I felt that I had the drive to achieve great success if I stepped out on my own. I felt that if I could work and give my creative ideas to help advance another person’s business then why not do it for myself and build my own brand.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So I’m the CEO/Owner of Jarvis Lawhorn Weddings & Events, LLC based out of Miami, Florida. What sets my business apart from others is that we strive to offer excellent wedding planning and design services to our amazing clients. I would say I’m most proud that each client that I’ve had the pleasure of working with have become cherished friends and I’ve kept relations with them to be able to have them comeback to me to create other milestone events for them and their families. First, I would say my persistence, drive, passion and determination got me where I am today. Being a kid at age of 11, I made contact with the famous wedding planner, Mindy Weiss who took a chance on the kid from Miami, Florida who wanted to be a world-famous wedding planner. Mindy became my mentor and with networking I worked my way to position myself as a go-getter in my industry. I would say yes and no that it has been easy. The reason why I say that is because I had the connections with many leaders of the industry to get a head start but I had to worked 10-times harder to prove myself that I just wasn’t going to do the name-dropping game but that I would put in the work to become a successful leader and business owner. I’ve learned many lessons but the most valuable one would be persistent and a go after whatever dreams/goals that you set for yourself. Nothing will be given to you but you have to get up, show up and work to make it happen. Never lose faith and hope in what your life’s Purpose is. I would want the world to know that I’m just like them who came from an single-parent household who experienced struggles but I always kept the mindset that if I worked hard enough that my dreams/goals would manifest and become a reality. I look around now and see all my hard-work paying off slowly and in God’s timing. The thing I want people to know about my brand is that when you select Jarvis Lawhorn Weddings & Events to plan your special event we provide first-class service from beginning to end. My company is passionate and always strive to create a lasting memory that leaves clients and their guests in complete awe.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I would book my best friend at one of my favorite hotels in the city, The Edition Miami Beach which offers beachfront views and the hotel has a very modern all-white aesthetic which I love. We would do a nice Sunday Brunch at Victory Restaurant & Lounge in Midtown. They offer a 5-star experience while offering comfort foods. They have both indoor/outdoor seating and it’s in the hard of Miami which is a perfect setting. They play urban music and did I mention it’s black owned. And most likely head over to Ghost Bar for a nice partying vibe and hit the Hard Rock for some late-night gaming.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say that my mother, Sherri R. Black would be the person that I want to shoutout. She’s one of the strongest and most supportive mother’s a son could ask for. I credit my mother with being my biggest inspiration because I’ve seen her overcome so many challenges in life but even in the midst of those situations, she’s still motivated me to push towards Greatness in all aspects of my life. My mother is the person who pushed me to step outside the box and step out to go into the hospitality/weddings world. She would always say if that’s the thing you’re passionate about, go after it. She literally approved me to make one single phone call to celebrity wedding planner, Mindy Weiss whose based in Beverly Hills, Ca and that call changed the course of my life so I’m forever grateful to her for believing in me from the very beginning.
