We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Perlow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I lost my job in November 2023, coinciding with a significant wave of layoffs in the tech industry due to the economic climate. While losing a job can be challenging, I quickly recognized the strength of my professional network, which supported me in understanding that my 25+ years of experience in technology was indeed valuable. Rather than seeking a permanent position, the feedback I received pointed me toward opportunities as a consultant or contractor. Though I hadn’t initially planned to start a business at this stage in my career, the influx of contract offers made it clear that it was a path I couldn’t pass up.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I spent most of my career working at some of the largest technology companies in the industry, including IBM and Microsoft, serving as a consultant and technologist. Despite my professional experience in implementing technology, I have always had a passion for writing and communication. Throughout my career, I often observed that many of my colleagues possessed intelligence and abilities that exceeded my own. During meetings and conference calls, I frequently felt like the least knowledgeable person in the room. However, I came to realize that even the most intellectually gifted individuals often struggle with written communication, whether in conveying business value or articulating technical concepts. As a result, professionals who can effectively translate complex technical ideas into understandable business concepts are indeed rare and highly sought after.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Little Havana, it’s one of the most defining neighborhoods in Miami — and nothing beats a Cuban meal, cafecitos and pastries at one of Calle Ocho’s many iconic eateries. I’m also a huge fan of North Beach where you can enjoy the ocean breeze as well as enjoy the various restaurants serving different Latin American cuisines. I also tell people visitong the city to check out Coral Gables and the Venetian Pool which is a unique experience and great to do during the warmer months.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My maternal grandfather, who passed in 2011. We were very different in personality and talents, but he was the one who drove me to become successful in my field. One thing he said resonated with me throughout my life, which is “I don’t care what you end up doing for a living; you can be a ditch digger. But whatever it is you do, you should be a damn good one.”
