We had the good fortune of connecting with Javier Mayol and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Javier, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I love movies. As far back as I can remember I loved watching films on the big screen. I have a lot of memories of vacations, outings and even dates that included some kind of movie memory. Watching Spaceballs on a trip to San Diego, or watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind while working in LA. And while I had always been a semi-decent athlete in my younger days, it didn’t quite give me the satisfaction that writing and coming up with ideas did. As the years went by I had to choose what I wanted to do with my life and my instincts kept leaning into the artistic/creative path. I don’t think there was ever a doubt what I was meant to do and after high school, I went to the University of Central Florida with sole purpose of getting a film degree and thus began my journey in film.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a writer, producer and editor. My production company, Phoenixfire Films, was founded to create unique and exciting projects across various platforms including film and TV. I began working in the entertainment industry in 2001, right out of college, working at Universal Orlando’s Production Group. Since then I have worked in a countless projects including music videos, commercials and feature films. The road has been long and there has been many obstacles along the way. But throughout the years you learn to grow from mistakes, let go of things that are out of your control and enjoy the ride. I am excited for the future of Phoenixfire Films. Love and Hostages and Hialeah: A Comedy Series has opened doors for future projects. I have a couple of animation projects that I’m working on while also working to get some live action projects off the ground and of course a Season 2 of Hialeah.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The great thing about South Florida is that there’s a little bit of everything for everyone. Whenever people visit me I make sure they get the authentic latin food.. Of course, no stop to South Florida is complete without enjoying the beaches.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This industry is not easy. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, time. There are times of great joy and success and there are tough times that test your will. Throughout all this, my family and friends have been incredibly supportive in the sometimes long and arduous journey. Specififcally my wife and kids, who see the struggles that a career in film and television can bring. While I enjoy the process and the final reward, nothing makes me happier than seeing them enjoy and feel proud of the work I’ve done.
