We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Izquierdo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, why did you pursue a creative career?
The true meaning behind pursuing my career is to make every single person I meet/work with feel empowered, beautiful, appreciated, and loved. I can’t begin to describe the feeling and emotions that go through my body when I hand the mirror over to my client for them to see the final makeup look on themselves. In that exact moment I always tell myself “This is what I do it for.” This is what keeps me going. This is what tells me I chose the career path that was meant for me. This is what keeps me motivated to keep learning more techniques, keep growing my business, and helping others along the way. I have numerous ideas that haven’t come to light yet. But I’m taking it one step at a time. I can’t stop and won’t stop until I’ve achieved everything I want to do, and I’m meant to do in this universe. There have been times that my clients have teared up as soon as they see themselves in the mirror when I’m done with their makeup because they feel so confident. It’s as simple as covering a blemish or even brightening up the under eyes, etc. Everybody and I repeat everybody is their own kind of beautiful. But I know what it feels like to not feel your best self. I know what it feels like to have low self-esteem. I know what it feels like to be embarrassed of your acne. Throughout my career I’ve learned that all skin has texture no matter what status you have in your career or as an individual. I’ve learned to love myself and my acne prone skin through the worst of it. And guiding others to do the same. We only have one body, and we must learn to embrace and appreciate every single part of it. That is what gets me going. What I do it for. That is my “why”. <3

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

As a little girl I always played the role of being a teacher at home. I remember clear as day setting up my board and handing out papers to my nonexistent students. And it’s crazy how ever since I was young, I knew what my reason for being in this universe was. I just didn’t know what type of teacher or lessons I would be giving. As I grew up, I always loved makeup and had such an interest in it. Little did I know that makeup was what my future career would consist of. I want to be able to teach others and provide tips, tricks, and knowledge I’ve learned myself throughout the years. I want to help others embrace their beauty and feel empowered. Nothing makes me happier than to be able to assist anybody with any questions or even concerns they might have. I am most proud of the makeup artist I am today for still working on myself not just as an individual but for taking the leap of faith in myself to keep going and striving to make a name for myself. I’ve done makeup on myself as far as I can remember. And I started doing makeup on others in 2015. I would have to say that it hasn’t been easy. I have had struggles throughout my journey. And I feel as if that is completely okay. There is no tougher skin than the one that has gone through hell and back but keeps going. I’ve learned that people want to see you do good but not better than them. I’ve learned that not everybody has their best interest in your life. And some people are seasonal in your life. And that is okay. All the lessons that life teaches me I take in and learn from them. Either to better myself, or to see how I can turn it into something positive. My story has only begun, and I can’t wait for my future self to look back and say… “It was all worth it Queen. You have achieved and accomplished everything you wanted and more.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We most definitely need to start the morning with a Cuban toast and freshly squeezed orange juice from “Vicky Bakery.” After that we can head towards the beach area, spend the day getting our glow on. Get some drinks and soak up the sun. I would say we can do some shopping at Lincoln Road or any mall. But of course, we can’t forget to stop by any local Sephora or Ulta. Because let’s be honest… you can never have enough makeup or skincare products! Am I right? Later on at night, we can get ready and head towards the Wynwood/Downtown area. So many bars and clubs we can go to. Throughout the week we can go to PAM, walk on Ocean Drive get some drinks from Fat Tuesdays. And just enjoy all the fun events and things we can do here in Miami.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to personally thank my parents (my mom Maria and my dad Carlos). My parents left Cuba at a young age not knowing if they would be able to go back to their country to see any of their family again. They left with the simple reason of wanting freedom and wanting a better life for themselves. They wanted to start a family but nowhere near Cuba. They wanted it to be en “El Yuma” aka the United States of America. They didn’t want their future kids (which is now my sister Jessica & I) to struggle and go through all the troubles and hardships they had to go through. I am forever grateful, forever thankful for them for being the strong and powerful individuals that they are. Without them I wouldn’t be the woman I am today. I don’t just do this for myself, I always have them in mind. They have supported me through it all even if it took a little longer for them to realize that this is what I’m meant to do in my life. This is my purpose. This is my why. They know how strongly and motivated I feel about makeup, skincare and all things beauty. I would also like to thank my sister (Jessica). She has always pushed me telling me to try new types of makeup looks and pushing me out of my comfort zone. I truly do appreciate that. Also, my boyfriend (Robert). Since day one he accepted and respected my career choice and has helped me along the way. He purchased my very first vanity set up and I’ll never forget that day. Constantly pushes me to be the best version of myself. And most importantly to not give up on my dreams. Last but not least, my friend (Carmen Danger). We have worked together for the past two years and have accomplished so many projects, and have brought the visions to life. So many goals we have yet to achieve, and we’re only getting started! Thank you all for being my support system and pushing me to better myself in any way possible not just as a creative or artist but as me Jennifer Izquierdo.
