We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Thelwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenny, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is the deciding factor on how far you’re willing to go. I think people must define “risk” for themselves. Many of us feel like we take a risk if we gamble $1000 on a hand of blackjack and it is for someone who is not a gambler. However, to a gambler, $1000 may not be a risk at all because they are used to betting much more than that on a regular basis. The bottom line is that one must define how far they want to go without looking at where they have been. What is your goal? What’s your plan? You have to do things you’ve never done to get results you’ve never seen. When I decided that I wanted to go to college, I couldn’t look at my family line and make a conscious decision on whether that would be a good choice. I had nothing to compare it to. I didn’t know what going to college was going to entail, how much effort it would take, what it would cost me, or how I would get through it. The only thing I had was a dream and a letter of acceptance to Alabama State University, arguably the best historically black university (HBCU) on the planet. I took a risk and turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I know all about risks too well. I took a risk on going to college, on writing a book about my personal struggles, and on starting a business that I had never envisioned until I published my book. Needless to say, all the confirmation I need to jump out on faith is God’s, not man.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friends already know that when they step foot on Miami grounds we have to get some true culture experiences starting with FOOD! We are going straight to Club Tipico Dominicano for some good ol’ Dominican food. A great dish full of white rice, stewed oxtails, red beans. and fried, sweet plantains. Then, on a Friday evening, we’d hit up NYSW Jazz Lounge in Fort Lauderdale for some live Jazz, some good food, and a grown and sexy vibe. Lastly, we’ll stroll around to the Broward County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated where we are sure to be welcomed with love and kindness to participate in activities to help the community. My people know that when they hang with me, they are sure to get a well rounded experience. Laughs, good food, music, and giving back to the community.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow!!! I love this part! I am huge on giving people their roses while living. There are so many people that helped, encouraged, and guided me throughout this journey and I’d hate to miss someone. To my husband, my daughter, my mom and family, HornetNation, Alamance-Burlington School System, Broward County Public Schools (especially my COBRA fam), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Martin Memorial AME “the Purple church”, my best friends…….and God who is my saving grace and leader of my life, I can never repay you all enough for believing in me and continuing to give this little girl a chance at a life of greatness and abundance. Your continued support fuels my passion and ignite my fire.
