We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Oscar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jill, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I have given up so many times. I accepted the answer “no” from so many things in my life. I was told by someone when i was 21 and green in this business that working in Television is not a life for a young girl like me. I believed him! I went on for the next 25 years believing that I couldn’t do the career i really wanted. I had jobs that i hated. I couldn’t really find what made me happy. It wasn’t until i ran the NYC Marathon that something clicked. I actually pushed myself to finish something that was so incredibly hard. That’s when i realized that i should never, ever quit again for something that i really want. just to keep going!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my art or my makeup. I have been trained since the age of 8 to oil paint. A painting will take me 6 months to a year to complete because of getting details right. I am proud of where my career has taken me. I work hard at it, never asked for favors from anyone. I just kept building and networking . Making tons of phone calls until someone gave me a chance. There was no social media to get my career off the ground. I’m kind of glad about that. My work speaks for itself and that makes me proud. This is still not easy but i made a lot of good connections along the way. The one thing i learned is to be early to a job, be professional and kind. Show a team player attitude and not be too proud to have to do something that is not in your job description. I want the world to know that Jill Oscar Makeup has one goal, that is to make her client happy.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
We would go to Miami Beach one day, people watch and eat in one of the many great restaurants on the beach. Boca Raton and Delray have so much to offer as well. The Ave on Atlantic is a great spot to hang out. There are wine bars, on the Ave, Boca Raton has Mizner Park and love to eat at Houstons. Deerfield Beach is a beautiful Beach to go swim. And be outdoors. There are places in Jupiter to go Kayaking and see nature.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shout out goes to Robert Salles who gave me the encouragement, love and support. My Parents Saul and Shirley Oscar who tried to get me to go to Art School after High School but i thought i knew better. :). But they showed me how to be a good person.
