We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Chantel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are a lot of important factors behind my success as an artist, but I would say the biggest factor has been limiting my limitations. In the past, I found myself trying to limit my creativity by asking myself questions like “Will other people like this?” “Will this grab people’s attention?” when I had a new idea. It felt like a battle between choosing to use my time creating new designs, and feeding my creativity, or making what I knew would get people interested based on past experiences. Realistically, if making/selling art is a source of income for you, you’ll have these worries. However, it’s incredibly important to stay true to YOUR vision. To feed YOUR creativity. To create for YOU and from YOU. Learning to separate myself from people’s opinions and not place limits on myself to only creating what I know will grab people’s attention has helped me grow as an artist and nurture new skills that have brought me so many blessings. It’s important as an artist to allow yourself space to create freely, and catering to other people’s opinions on what you should be doing/creating puts you in a very small box. Allowing myself to fully explore and experience my creativity keeps my passion burning bright. That passion, for me, is very necessary. It keeps me feeling the same way I did when I started this journey.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a self-taught jewelry artist specializing in wire-wrapped jewelry! I use heatless techniques to create one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces inspired by flora, fauna, and the cosmos. I often hear from people they can recognize my work based on the attention to detail, the signature intricacies I add to an otherwise simplistic design, and the focus on quality and symmetry.
One of my favorite parts of the jewelry process is coming up with new designs! My design work is something I’m really proud of, and it’s what I feel sets me apart.
Professionally, I got where I am today because of the love and encouragement I received from my closest friend, my partner, some of my family members, (wonderful) strangers online, and a guy I met at a outdoor market in San Diego, CA (special shoutout to him. I can’t remember his name, but he took the time to listen to my uncertainties, and teach me wire weaving. I never forgot him, his kindness, and his willingness to help others. I hope he sees this!)
I’ve been making art my entire life for various reasons, and it has been my long-time passion. It’s carried me through tough times, and given me reasons to celebrate. Making art into my career wasn’t my first thought, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I wouldn’t be in this position had those people not encouraged me to start selling my work every time I posted my (at the time) new hobby. I have every person who’s ever supported me in any way to thank for my success.
As an artist you face many challenges, and I can’t say my journey has been an easy one. However, I can say it has been worth it. I’ve dealt with financial challenges, needing longer breaks due to chronic illness, feeling discouraged by social media algorithms, and lots of things happening in my personal life that have made the creative process difficult. These things have taught me the importance of staying confident in myself and my work, and trusting that things will work out because I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Columbus, OH. I would take them to the Franklin Park Conservatory, Three Bites Bakery, Loving Hut, and ANY of our local vendor markets!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my best friend, collaborator, and the artist behind Free Soul Expressions, Elisha Watts.
