We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Fine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I sometimes have to laugh when I think about how this all started. I’m not sure I really looked at it as a business. I didn’t think that far ahead. I remember saying to my husband, I’ve always wanted to get into photography, and he said well why don’t you? So I think a week later we bought my camera and I started taking pictures of family and friends. I would post some of the shots I took on social media and then people started asking how much I charge. It just took off from there

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Photographers are not hard to stumble across. They’re everywhere ha! The pictures I take are more than just a “say cheese”. I capture the moment. I want you to remember exactly how things were on that day. That’s why my style is so candid. I want families to be themselves. Couples to spend time with each other like I wasn’t even there. It just means so much more when you can see the genuine emotion come through each photograph. I wouldn’t at all say it’s been easy to get to where I am. I work a full time job and I’m a mama to 3 beautiful children. I knew I wanted to make this a success but how do you even find the time to manage? It wasn’t easy and still isn’t but let’s just say I never stop? I’m starting now to learn my value, it’s easy for people to decide you charge too much, to ask for discounts. I’ve done a lot of work for less than I should. I try to keep my prices affordable because I know what it is to struggle and I want people to be able to afford my services but I’ve set some limits. I think I would want people to know in general there is a lot more to being a photographer than just snapping some pictures. The process after is what makes it all come together. I work super hard to make sure that when my galleries are delivered, people are in love with their albums. It’s my goal each and every time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I live in Toronto, Canada. The main attractions are in the city. If you haven’t been, the CN tower would be a staple. I’m a mom so I’d also say Ripley’s Aquarium. If you’re into amusement parks, Wonderland is where you’d want to be. The rest of our week would probably include walking downtown and stopping in at cute shops and food places we’ve never tried. I love using social media to scope out new restaurants. Although I haven’t yet been, 44 Toronto seems to be the place to be if you love the night life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I can say without a doubt I wouldn’t have been able to get this far without the support of my better half. He never doubted for a second what I was capable of and he pushes me when I sometimes doubt myself. Starting a business can be scary. You’re putting out a lot of money into something that might not be successful, but that wasn’t even a worry for him. He fully believed in me. I also have to give some recognition to the support of my family and friends. There’s a select few who have been so encouraging through this process.
