Meet Jorge Charun | The Miami Salsa Scene CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jorge Charun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jorge, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I would say that more than just moving your body, Salsa and Bachata dancing is more of a way of life. Is a way to build a community, to bring people from all walks of life and all ages together. Is a safe environment to socialice, meet new people and have fun at the same time. And the biggest myth of all about Salsa and bachata dancing is that “it has to be in your blood to be great at it”. That is not true. Some of the top world performers and instructors are not of latin descendance.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
MIami Salsa Scene is a company that has worked on growing our Salsa and bachata dance community for the past 15 years. We have created a synergetic mutually beneficial relationship between, dance schools, instructors and venues in oder to position everyone involved in a space to grow.

Not only we have brought excellent venues to our dance community where they can go Salsa nd bachata Dancing throughout South Florida fr the past 15 years. We have also added under our Umbrella two amazing annual Dance Festivals. The Miami Salsa Congress @miamisalsacongress and Bachateando Dance Festival @Bachateandomiami.

It was not easy at first. Finding venues who wanted to host us was a bit challenging a few years back. The focus was on top 40 parties and Reggaeton parties. They had the priority but little by little we started gaing ground and now we are hosting 6 weekly parties and two annual festivals.

We overcame those challenges through persistent and the support of our dance community. We have grown exponentially thanks to them.

We want the wrld to know that if you want to try something different, fun and make new friends the Salsa and Bachata community here in South Florida will welcome you with open arms.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami is a great city with tons to offer. I love the wynwood are. Lots of great photo opportunities, little havana is a must. The iconic calle ocho has lots to offer. Tuesday and Wednesday night you can stop at ball and chain for the perfect dinner, free salsa lessonpaired with the best mojitos in town.

Thusrday would be a great opportunity to hit the sand bar by boat or kayak and at night head over to Chico Malo for dinner and a night of Salsa dancing.

You cannot say you experienced Miami without a stroll down south beach. I like to walk on the bordwalk down to South Point sit on the grass and watch the sunset as I see the cruiships leave the bay heading over to the Caribbean seas.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One of my mentors who I would like to recognize is Mr Rene Gueits from Salsa Lovers. Who took me under his wing and taugh me how to think BIG.
