We had the good fortune of connecting with Joslyn Crowl and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joslyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started my business, it was a part-time job because I didn’t think I could do it full-time. I had a lot of limitations people (including myself) put on me, from having health issues and dyslexia and needing the money to support myself. I did it for several years as just a part-time business. It was the most significant leap I could have made for myself when I went full-time. I had already had to make many hard choices with my health and life, so at that point, I leaped before I looked and had no net to catch me, so I burned the ships and set off to sail.
I had to figure out things as I went, and still do at times, almost 14 years later. Owning a business is constantly changing but knowing I do it for a better life for myself and my future is the foundation for starting my own business and to keep going.
What should our readers know about your business?
It seems to be ever-evolving, in 2008 I started a part-time business in photography. In 2015 I went full-time with my photography business. In 2017 I started offering mentoring to photographers and opened my own studio. In 2022 I published a book and started a podcast. I am also expanding my mentoring to online resources to help more people. I share the dates so that people know that sometimes things take time. It just doesn’t always happen overnight.
A lot of life has happened, including hardships, health issues, and ups and downs, and my business helps keep me grounded and motivated. I have a lot of knowledge and experience and I want to help others with that. I heard a quote once that was “turn your mess into a message,” and that set well with me because it was real messy for a while.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is something I have talked about; a fellow photographer friend lives in Florida. We met in a Facebook group 7 years ago and became the best of friends; we chat and video chat often, sometimes every day. We haven’t ever met, so we do talk about visiting each other. We tried to meet up before, but something came up, and we couldn’t. If she came to town, I think I would have to take a drive out and show her Hocking Hills. There are waterfalls, which I think a lot of people don’t think of waterfalls when they think of Ohio, but we have them. It is really pretty out there and scenic. I would also have to show her my studio and around town here in the city because they both complement each other in Ohio. You can come for the city and leave and go into the country life fairly quickly.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am a very religious person; without God, I would not be who and where I am today, I believe everything I have gone through has been for a reason and a higher purpose. Around the time I went full-time with my business, I found Tony Robbins, who helped change my business mindset as well.
