We had the good fortune of connecting with Jyssica White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jyssica, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
My single most important decision was finding my niche, tapping into what I love and perfecting over time …but I definitely had to focus on my self growth and used the art of LISTENING .Having compassion for my clients play a huge roll in my success . I genuinely care about their needs and want them to have a positive experience with me and on their own when it comes to hair care .
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is you . I enjoy shining light on a beauty you didn’t know you had . My niche is natural hair … natural hair is home to most women’s insecurities. It’s highly misunderstood. I’m proud to be a part of the evolution of education of kinky , coily , wavy hair , it’s come a long way . When I decided to become a cosmetologist , I knew I wanted to specialize in natural hair, everyone was afraid of it. I was obsessed! I decided to help my clients understand their hair how I do so they don’t have to spend hours on tutorials or spend endless amounts of money on products that may not be for them. There’s nothing hard or challenging about natural hair but the hardest part is getting you to understand that before I service you ..

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Food and Nature is my thing I love Perry Wings , Vegan On The Go, Gigi’s Music Cafe , I love Flamingo Gardens&Fern Forrest , if you don’t have a Publix where you’re from , you better get a Publix Sub while you’re here .

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother is the one who told me to go to cosmetology school . I had no idea what I wanted to do after high-school. I tried community college but it wasn’t my thing . I ended up moving to Tallahassee where my cousin Mike allowed me to stay and figure it out (thanks Mike ) by that time all of my friends had their plans … working or college .I felt like I too needed to leave my home town to figure it out . My cousin lived right across the street from Aveda Institute of Tallahassee. I did research , scheduled a tour , seemed easy so I enrolled . I will never forget Mrs . Carrie !!!! I had no idea how challenging school was going to be … think boot camp ! Mrs Carrie motivated me to choose a specialty , she made me feel it was possible to focus on one thing and expand on it . Lastly my grandfather took care of my rent while I was in school … he was on a fixed income (disability) and still made a way for me to be able to stay in school , he survived colon cancer and also suffered loosing one leg , he had to stop working …My hero . He passed 3 years ago , he would be very proud of me.
