We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Richey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karla,  Other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
To be a business owner is not an easy decision. You have to be conscious that you are ready to take a lot of risks. Everything starts as an idea, then a plan, and after you launch it, it might work or it might not, but you have to believe in yourself and in your project. In my specific case, I wanted to integrate my personal experiences as a new mom into a project that will help other parents. The single most important decision that contributed to my success was to integrate my family as part of my business. My parents are my base, my husband is my right hand, and my kids are my inspiration. They all help me tremendously. Most of the articles you will read in Miami Kids Magazine are topics that as a mom I wanted to learn and explore. Topics that as a mom I experience with my own kids and also learning from a conversation with other parents. In our events, my kids are the creators of every game you will see. They helped me create Sharky, our songs, etc.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I went to school in Peru and got a bachelor’s degree in Communications Science with a specialization in Marketing from a Peruvian University UNIFE. I worked in Peru in the marketing department of a very well-known multinational corporation for 7 years, starting as a receptionist when I was only 18 and growing with the company to manage the CRM department at age of 23. I worked there for about two years then I moved to the USA when I was 25 representing my country in a beauty pageant and I worked in modeling with a contract with a modeling agency. I used to model in my spare time in my country and participated in a few beauty pageants like Miss Peru and others. When I moved to this country I was modeling for different companies such as Coca-Cola, American Express, Hugo Boss, Naturalizer, and many others but something was missing… I wanted to grow in my career. I started sending resumes, but nobody called me. After looking around to work in marketing, I decided to open my own business, I created a talent agency that now is 13 years in business. When I become a mom, my priorities changed, and Miami Kids started first as an idea when my son Kenneth was born, and a reality when we launched our first issue in 2017 when my daughter Valeria was one year old. At the beginning, it was very difficult to manage two companies, two kids, and being a wife but the support of my husband and mother were the key, along with good organization and sometimes long nights in the computer to not interfere with my children’s routine.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So much to do in Florida! In Miami, I will take her to the Miami Zoo, Key Biscayne, and their beautiful beaches and dinner on Lincoln Road. I will also take her to the Florida Keys, Everglades, the west coast. If she is traveling with kids, we will definitely go to Orlando and the theme parks. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my parents. They are the people that mold you as a child and give us examples to follow with their actions in life. I’m very lucky to come from a structured and caring family. My mom is always supporting me with her bright and wise advice and also helping to take care of my kids when I’m busy. There is nobody better than a mom to give such a big responsibility to take care of your most precious kids. My dad is my partner in the magazine and he has many years of experience working in the media. And not to forget my grandparents, three of them in heaven. They always gave me a great foundation of pure and unconditional love.
