We had the good fortune of connecting with Katerin Mendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katerin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I discovered my passion for beauty during a difficult period in high school—it became my escape and creative outlet. I started watching makeup tutorials on YouTube, and what began as a distraction turned into a genuine source of inspiration. Seeing how makeup could transform not just appearance, but confidence, really moved me. Eventually, I picked up my own brushes and began experimenting. That was the beginning of my journey into the beauty world, and it’s what sparked my pursuit of a creative career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a first-generation Latina who immigrated to the U.S. at just 8 years old. My beauty journey began during a challenging time in high school—YouTube became my escape, and I was instantly drawn to beauty tutorials. I’ve always loved makeup, but as I started practicing, I realized it was more than just a hobby. It was a form of expression, healing, and ultimately, a way to inspire others—just like those videos once inspired me.

It hasn’t been easy. The beauty space is massive and constantly evolving, and at times, it’s felt intimidating. But that’s exactly why I keep going. I want to be a voice for immigrants—especially young Latinas—who may feel like we don’t have a ‘place’ in this community. I’m here to show that with passion, dedication, and perseverance, we do belong, and we can thrive.

What sets me apart is my perspective, my story, and my desire to uplift others through creativity. I want the world to know that my brand isn’t just about beauty—it’s about representation, resilience, and reminding people that their background doesn’t limit their dreams.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to visit me in Miami, I’d make sure they had the absolute best time! First stop would be one of my favorite restaurants—CVI.CHE 105. It’s a Peruvian spot and hands down one of the best in the city. My go-to dish is called “Mi Favorito y lo dice Juan!”—and trust me, the name says it all! And don’t even get me started on the desserts… they’re to die for!

We’d definitely spend a day at the beach—rent a cabana, soak up the sun, and just unwind from the chaos of the world. A little escape is always necessary for the soul.

On Sunday night, I’d take her to the speakeasy behind Coyo Taco in Wynwood. It’s always a vibe there—good music, great energy, and the kind of spot where you just lose track of time dancing and laughing.

Throughout the week, we’d explore places with a creative and inspiring atmosphere—maybe hit a local art show or café where business-minded people hang out. I’ve always found entrepreneurs and go-getters super interesting. It’s inspiring to hear their stories, learn from their journey, and get that extra push of motivation from people who are out there making it happen.

By the end of the week, we’d have a mix of amazing food, relaxation, good vibes, and new inspiration—basically, the perfect Miami experience.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a special shoutout to my family for always being there and supporting me, but most of all, to my grandfather. He’s the person I’ve always wanted to make proud. Since I was a little girl, he made countless sacrifices to give me a chance at a better future and the opportunity to pursue my dreams. His love, strength, and dedication have shaped so much of who I am today.
