We had the good fortune of connecting with Katia Luu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katia, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
It’s said that your natural interests and hobbies as a child tell you a lot about your destiny and I definitely believe that to be true. I’m an only child, so growing up I was by myself a lot and would pass the time by being creative in any way I could. I would draw out characters and create plot lines and fill up notebooks with comic strip drawings. I also remember playing around with my mom’s camcorder and making little movies and funny videos with my friends. Then in high school, my favorite class was broadcast news where I loved recording and editing segments for the school news. It’s funny though because when I was like 18, I was set on going to law school and becoming a lawyer. But now, I don’t think I could picture myself not doing something artistic or creative. Being creative has always been a large part of who I am, and I feel the most fulfilled when creating.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Life moves fast but I am such a sentimental, nostalgic person. So with that being said, the goal of my photography and videography is often to capture and document moments that I can hold onto forever. I love knowing that the second I take a photo or video of something, that moment in time is instantly turned eternal.
A large focus of my work is on music, and when it comes to the music industry, it definitely is a bit difficult to break into as a photographer or videographer who is just starting. I think that it is really important to stay optimistic and open-minded for this reason. An affirmation that I’ve learned to keep in mind is: “Everything that does not exist in the physical realm at this very moment exists in a field of potentiality.” I’m still young and early on in my career, so I’m just really excited to see what I can accomplish in the future. I can’t wait to see where I will be in five or even two years from now.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite areas of Miami is Wynwood. I love the artwork everywhere and the more laid-back, chill vibes at the bars and clubs there compared to other parts of the city. One of my go-to spots there is 1800-Lucky because not only do they have delicious food during the day time, but it’s also a really fun place to go at night on the weekends. Another Wynwood favorite of mine is Oakberry – they have the best acai bowls in all of Miami in my opinion! Key Biscayne is also a beautiful part of the city. The beach there and the Bill Baggs nature park with walking trails are lovely. And lastly, the design district is a very cool area for shopping or just hanging out as well.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom has always been my biggest fan through everything that I do, no matter what it is. I feel really lucky to have a parent that is so supportive of me pursuing a creative career, because I know that is not always the same situation for everyone out there. I also have a circle of really supportive, loving friends that I am so thankful for. I try not to place too much value on outside validation, but I’d be lying if I said that the encouragement from loved ones isn’t a huge motivator!
