We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Cassin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
The concept of competition. As a creative I have never been inspired nor seen anyone else inspired by competition. I see no reason for it. Art is subjective. No one sees and interprets the world the way you do. No one relates to people and clients the way you do. You are perfectly unique. The clients that are meant for you will always fine you. Community is what makes art thrive, not competition.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a lifestyle photographer specializing in families, couples, and portraits. As a mother myself, I’m obsessed with the journey of motherhood. I love to be the one to follow families though all of their important milestones. Engagement, pregnancy, newborn, and beyond.

It’s crazy to me how I ended up in this field. I spent most of my life as an actor. I have a BFA in theatre performance. Photography kind of happened to me by accident – and I’m so glad it did.

Looking back I think it was crazy that I started this business 5 months postpartum. I was just desperate to create. To use the part of my brain that fueled my soul. Just as I was figuring all of this out- the pandemic started. I got really creative and started offering sessions via FaceTime! I was literally editing screenshots on my computer that I took during a video chat with clients! After that I started recruiting couples to reenact famous movies which is still a fun passion project of mine! I think the key to a successful business is to never stop learning. Don’t be afraid to let people see you learn and grow.

I’m super passionate about newborn lifestyle sessions. Newborn lifestyle is shot in home with no props- just you and your baby enjoying your new normal. I had an incredibly difficult time when I was newly postpartum. I often tell the story about how I was generously gifted a standard newborn session when my son was born. I was in complete agony the entire time. Watching a stranger hold and pose my new baby felt like torture. I counted down the seconds until he was back in my arms. When I learned about newborn lifestyle I fell in love with giving mothers the experience I wish I had.

If I could tell you what makes me “different” I’d say that I like things messy. I’m not here to force poses on you and your children. I’ll never move their hands “just so” or try to create the “perfect” moment. I want your memories to be real. I want you to look back on these times in your life when all your kids wanted to do was run on the beach. I want you to remember how playful you and your partner were before you got married. I want you to remember every wrinkle on your newborns face. There is so much beauty in imperfection.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my goodness I don’t think I’m the best person to answer this question. I just moved here! I’ve been a New Yorker my whole life! We recently decided to move down here to be closer to family!

I will say I cannot wait until I am able to answer this question confidently! Until then, give me ALL your recommendations so I can explore!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are two people I attribute my success to : my son and my husband. I decided 5 months postpartum that I was going to follow my dreams and start this business. I wanted him to know that as long as you are kind and work hard, you can accomplish anything in this life. He motivates me to be my best self everyday. My husband has done nothing but support and encourage this business from day one. He makes me feel limitless. My boys are my everything.
