We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Vega and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I think everyone that has ever know me, knew I was born to stand out rather than fit in. I was always into the “arts” from a young age but not art, like pen to paper. My brain didn’t work like that. But creating with my hands was different. I started cooking and baking with my Mom and Grandma as soon as I could stand on a stool at the counter. I was not only taught the physical element of cooking and baking, I was taught the love and passion you put into it too. My Grandma always told me “your going to be a chef one day babe”. And I guess it’s because of her, the love and passion she taught me for food, that I am where I am, doing what I’m doing..

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I own a gothic spooky inspired bakehouse in West Palm Beach Florida. Our menu puts a unique spin on southern classic foods and desserts like our infamous biscuit sandwiches, homemade sausage gravy, banana puddin and cobblers. Our menu also features strange and unusual items like cereal killer bars, half pound stuffed cookies and our mile high cake. We pride ourselves on not only the quality of our food but the atmosphere that we have created to go along it. The bakehouse is a fun and inviting space for all WeirDOUGH’s big and small.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in South Florida, my first stop would be to Blowing Rocks Preserve. After going there I’d take you to Blueline Surf & Paddle to rent paddle boards and cruise around the inlet. Lunch would definitely be at Leftovers cafe for crusted fish over salad. Later in the day we would head south to snorkel off the Blue Heron bridge, and for dinner we would grab food from any one of the great vendors at Grandview Market. Then we would end the night with a delicious tea from Hakuna Ma Kava.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To My warrior of a Mother! You are the strongest woman I know. You fought for me since day one and you set fire to the trails that I would walk in life.

To my Dad. I am your daughter through and through. I get my strength, fight, and independence from you. Something every little girl deserves to learn.

I love you both so much!
