Meet Katrina Snyder | Illustrator & Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Snyder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katrina, what’s your definition for success?
I define success as that feeling when you know you’ve trusted your gut instinct and not allowed doubts and insecurities to get in the way.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s funny when you can look back and think “it was so obvious what I wanted, why did it take me so long to get here?” but you have to realize that there’s no time limit to becoming what you want to be, you literally just have to do all of the mental and emotional work to figure out what that is and take the steps to get there. I’m a self taught artist, and for a long time I thought I would be judged for it, and could never be professional without having an art degree (in fact I don’t have a college degree whatsoever) but turns out tenacity and hard work is something you can be just as proud of as if you went the traditional route. It hasn’t been easy, and I have definitely employed a “fake it till you make it” mentality a lot of times, but I finally feel like I’m past all of the beginning hurdles and now clearly can see the road I’m on and the goals I hope to accomplish.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m going to pretend this is a Covidless scenario (remember those times?!) There is a park tucked away here in Orlando called Kraft Azalea Park – it’s small but so beautiful, nestled on a lake with a tiny little amphitheater and in the spring a bunch of cranes nest and have their babies, it’s incredible to see! Also the Morse Museum on Park Ave houses works of art by Louis Comfort Tiffany, some really large breathtaking pieces too. To see up close the true craftmanship that imagined and then put these art pieces together is really inspiring for me. It seems like something so impossibly difficult, staining and cutting little pieces of fragile glass and assembling them into some giant works of art that stand the test of time? Really incredible to think about. As far as food I would say my favorite place is Black Bean Deli, it’s cuban food with lots of delicious vegan options and I honestly could eat there every week for the rest of my life haha. Also there’s a tiny little Thai restaurant really close to my house called Mee Thai, and it’s just one of those friendly authentic restaurants with incredible food that you hope stays right there forever. I’m lucky that I live in a real melting pot of cultures and there is a neverending list of neat places to visit and try.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that have helped shape me into a better artist! Some well known ones like Lisa Congdon, who is an incredibly inspirational illustrator that is also very transparent about her journey. She always encourages staying true to yourself and carving out your own little path as an artist. Also my friend Marci Brinker, who is a very talented artist, but has always been someone I can bounce ideas off of and learn from. And then of course my spouse Jeff, more than anyone he has seen me go through the whole evolution of trying to find out what I wanted to do and how to get there, and has taught me to take the time to celebrate even little successes.
