We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Barker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Changing the way women think about what they can wear so they can celebrate who they are today and who they are becoming as they move into the next chapter of their lives. Brands, retailers and influencers all tell us with what we should be wearing. But often, those things don’t work for our bodies or our lives. We think there’s something wrong with us but there isn’t. At the end of the day, when you hit a certain age, it’s time to uncover what you really want to wear, what makes you feel beautiful and like you.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I help women refine and elevate their unique style through closet curation and personal styling. My philosophy is about being intentional with what you invest in and keeping your closet curated with pieces that make you feel your best with the body you have today. It’s about focusing on what works for you and only you because we are all different and we should celebrate that uniqueness.
I’m most proud of believing in myself and following my dream in midlife. I launched my closet curation and styling business when I was 49 and at the time it was a side gig to my full time producing career. I looked at 50 approaching and thought, it’s now or never, I have to give this my all. So I jumped in, made a website and launched without a real business plan. Knowing what I do makes a real difference in how women feel about themselves is what keeps me going.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Philadelphia…
Oyster House for cocktails and seafood. In the summer, a boat tour from the Delaware River to Schuylkill Banks. Visit the Rodin or Barnes Museum. Shopping on the Mainline at Kirna Zabete and Skirt and in town at Boyds and on Walnut Street. Le Caveau for wine and cheese tastings. And probably host a little something at home, because my favorite thing is intimate get togethers with close friends.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All the women entrepreneurs that I’ve met, mostly through instagram of all places, that have inspired me to believe, grow, and persevere in this new chapter of my life.
