Meet Lauren Lombardo | Inventor, Designer, Artist, Author/Illustrator and Founder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Lombardo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, why did you pursue a creative career?

Choosing a creative career was not a simple thing but it was a natural decision. Art gives me the possibility to communicate in many ways. Wether it is through my children’s books, my fashion accessories or paintings I create, I like that it is shareable with others and creates an impact. Staying true to my inner voice to pursue my creative ideas is important to me, I never ignore that voice. Everything we see is art or design. I like that I am part of a massive web of what makes the world go round. I wanted to contribute in that way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was always a self-starter.. I teach painting in Italy and have been all over Europe and the States with my classes. I self publish  illustrate and write children’s books. Dear Sun and Thank You, Neighbor available on Amazon!

However, becoming an inventor, writing my own utility patent of a travel accessory is something that I never thought of for my life; it just sort of happened. I got the idea for The Butterfly Hat when I was on a long haul flight from Rome, Italy to NYC. I couldn’t get comfortable and I definitely didn’t feel elegant in my mission to getting comfortable. The Butterfly Hat is super stylish, comfortable and provides the total black out of light that we all need when we have to sleep on a plane or anywhere for that matter. The Butterfly Hat looks adorable on children, so naturally, there will be a kids book coming out about taking a plane so look out for that! My plan is to get The Butterfly Hat everywhere! Including airports, spas, sports teams,  hotels and cruislines. The possibilities are endless and I am excited to grow my company Betty And Bradley.

Being able to share something with this community is an honor. Firstly, I usually live outside of my comfort zone and when I get an idea, I like to bring it into existence. I lived in Italy for years and was inspired by Italian Fashion. Every aspect of my life and creativity seems to have come together in one beautiful travel accessory. It was not easy, however, I overcame challenges by reading about other entrepreneurs who started with virtually nothing but an idea and did my best to keep figuring it out along the way. I connected with other inventors who seemed to have the same type of doubts and fears and it helps to have a support system of cheerleaders to help you. I kept telling myself,  “If you give up you’re going to look back wondering, “What If”. That is what keeps me going. A few good lessons I learned along the way is, consistency is key. If you start something you must give it your all and do whatever it takes to keep going. Every “set back” is Gods protection. I lean on God for direction and the best business partner is him. If you’re in doubt about a decision, pray on it. Also, the sales do not matter as much as the connections you make. You can do a trade-show or pop up and not sell one piece, but meet one person who believes in you with the right connections and they will automatically change your life. Nurture others who aspire to be in your shoes. Encourage and educate as much as you can. It is always about giving back. Never leave home without a business card and a sample you never know who you will meet.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

If my best friend was visiting Miami I would first take them for breakfast at Versailles and grab some amazing cuban coffee. To hang out, I would go to The Standard Bayside Grill for their amazing happy hour and views. For more eats I would have to take them to the WHARF for the best seafood and to hang out near the amazing yachts that are arms distance from your plate right on the river. During that awesome week a trip to Oleta park is a must to bike ride, bbq and kayak. It truly is paradise. I would have to take a boat out to sand bar and beer can island. Renting a pontoon boat with a BBQ on it for a day is so fun, and who doesn’t love to bbq on a boat? If it is raining, I’d love to go to the Perez Museum and take in some art. For shopping, the Design district is so fun, as well as Bal Harbour. My favorite area is near Purdy ave. They have the best little restaurants and bakeries, and the water is right there with beautiful views.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout is to the amazing friends who helped me on my Butterfly Hat Journey Roy, Anthony and Thom who were major players in helping with the patent process , website and photography. Thank you for everything. Stefano Marescotti, who sadly passed during the pandemic. He connected me to an amazing factory in Italy and was mentoring me to be on QVC, however that route has changed since his passing but he gave me amazing advice, encouragement and honest feedback.
