We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizz Gueits and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lizz, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Believe it or not, I had been baking since the age of 8 when I made a cake for my school bus driver. My mother owned and I administrated an assisted living facility for 30 years and I still baked here and there. When my mother passed away in 2016 and hurricane Irma destroyed the facility, in had to make a difficult decision that very next year ion to rebuild or just give up and it was easier emotionally to just let it go. Thats when I felt that my mother was pushing me to do what I always loved and fromthere ihas grown organically.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Five Loaves Baking Co. is a cottage baking business. We started many years ago baking pound cakes, banana and mango breads and selling them by the slice at special events such as 4th of July fireworks shows where my 8-year-old son would walk around and sell. Our name was his idea. I would make dozens of pies during what I call “Pie Season”, Thanksgiving so we were kind of seasonal. I never studied baking or pastry but always loved learning and did so on my own. I still spend hours at night watching YouTube videos about decorating techniques (I’m an insomniac). Actually, deciding to make this my full time job took losing my mom and our business to throw me out there and push me to pursue my dream. I believe GOD pruned me of the excuses that I had for not doing it. After many years of word of mouth advertising, I have built a steady clientele and I love that I have become part of their life stories by making their wedding cakes, baby showers and their children’s birthday cakes over the years. I have learned (and am still learning) to organize the business side of this which I don’t really enjoy, but have to do. I’m still working on a website with the help of my sons who act like my managers. It really is a family affair. The dream is to open a brick and mortar business. I know its sounds corny, but I hope that when someone orders from us or eats something I’ve made, they feel the love and care that I’ve put into it and that they taste the joy I put in what I do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Recently, I’ve enjoyed going to Midtown for a Sunday stroll and something to eat. My idea of a perfect day is dinner at Flemings on Pince in Coral Gables and then a quick drive to South Beach for a walk on Lincoln Road. I also love to take my Chihuahua, Magnolia to David T. kennedy park in Coconut Grove and get a frozen Lemonade from A.C.’s Ice’s or while in the Grove go to The Last Carrot for a natural jiuce or a vegan bite.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many, but I have to say my husband of course for.being so.suppoetive (and understanding) and the little community of moms in Miami Springs, Girl Scout troop #2564 and other small businesses in our area such as Laced with Charm! When the pandemic hit, I came up with DIY treat kits for kids to do while stuck at home and to help the moms in our community and the moms just spread the word from group to group! I feel that they catapulted us into the growth we have seen in the last year. I have been able to give back through Dinner Church a program where we feed our local community a full hot meal every monday night for take out. I’m also a part of Icing Smiles. Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. That has been such an honor.
