We had the good fortune of connecting with Lupe Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lupe, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was working in a job that was immensely stressful, I would come home and be in tears. I was already selling my art on the side and making money. One day I saw a program on t.v. of a woman that had left her job and had started a business. She was making less money but she was enjoying her life. I asked myself why am I doing this? Are things ever going to change? What happens if you leave and fail? Soon after my husband had a motorcycle accident with a semi-truck and was home-bound for six months. When my husband recovered and went back to work I put in my resignation letter and have not looked back.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a landscape artist that specializes in oils. I believe what sets my art apart from others is that my art exudes a sense of peace, and when you look at the vista that I paint, you feel as if you were there. I use a limited palette of only three to five pigments, but lately, I am most excited about using pigment made from acid mine drainage/toxic sludge.
I feel when using these pigments I am creating something beautiful out of what is considered a national catastrophe. And I am helping to clean the environments that I love to paint.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, Robert Watler was my art instructor. He has been not only my instructor but my mentor. His words of encouragement have shape me in ways that words cannot describe.
