We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Dewar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Nothing great was ever accomplished without taking on a little bit of risk. Risk is one of those things that I believe is best approached with thorough research and proper planning. When you’re tasked with making a risky decision, having appropriate insight and prior knowledge into whatever it is you’re deciding on ALWAYS allow for a higher rate of outcome success. As an entrepreneur, taking calculated risks is essential for not only taking the first step towards self-employment and creating a business, but also for making daily decisions that may impact my business as a whole. “Possibility” and “Chance” are both synonyms for the word risk, and to me, those go hand in hand with progress and innovation. What type of business do I want to create? Where should I buy a house? What type of job should I get? All of these questions come with their own levels of risk – risk that can be minimized with proper research, planning, and data-driven decision making. That said, you’ll find me investing in my business over a color on a roulette table, 9 times out of 10.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Dewr is a community for doers. If you’re goal-oriented, looking to improve your life through personal development, and are excited about interacting more with the world around you – Dewr is the place for you. Originally, Dewr was created under a different name – Divuture – meaning, “Diversify your Future”; A phrase I often tell myself as motivation to always be learning, doing, and trying something new. The goal was to create a community for members to create, join, track, and crush goals with friends, and that sentiment still remains today. Creating Dewr has been an incredibly intense process… mainly because it’s a software platform and I don’t know how to code. Daily, challenges arise that require research, insight, and calculated decision making in order to solve, and I am slowly learning to automate, delegate, and ask for help in instances where my skills fall short. It has always been a group effort. That being said, one of the fundamental pillars of what makes Dewr effective, is its element of social accountability. As entrepreneur, both personal responsibility and accountability are required attributes for ensuring our success. At the end of the day, my goal for Dewr is to be a place for growth. A place for members to discover new and exciting ways of appreciating the incredible world we live in. A resource for goal management. A home for personal initiative and help ourselves and our friends + family in becoming the best version of ourselves possible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Boston is a beautiful city with access to a wide array of scenic landscapes and the many trendy, cultural destinations of New England. Depending on the weather, a good first stop is George Howell Coffee in Newtonville, about a 20 minute drive outside of the city. Their selection of alternative milk options, and freshly pressed coffee drinks makes ensures that everyone can enjoy their favorite morning pick-me-up, regardless of a lactose intolerance. If the sun was high and humidity higher, a trip to Cape Cod is an absolute must. With sprawling beaches and plenty of lobster shanties, the Cape is the best place in the summer to indulge on the finer things New England’s seafood industry has to offer. Personally, I’ll be spending my time about two hours north of Boston, in the White Mountain National Forest, hiking the incredible 4,000-footers and enjoying a crisp lager at the summit. To cap things off, NOTHING can beat a bottle of wine paired with the fresh, homemade pasta of Casarecce in the Italian North End of Boston. A day spent active outside and finished off with the best that local business has to offer, is a day well spent to me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Building software can be very hard when you don’t know how to code. So for that reason, it should be known that an incredible community of IndieHackers, freelancers, colleagues, and mentors made the creation of the Dewr community possible. Shockingly enough, life exists outside of work, as well, and my amazing family, friends, and girlfriend, Mackenzie, have been the scaffolding that has held my chaotic life together. For all of the above, I am eternally grateful.
