We had the good fortune of connecting with Makayla Clanton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Makayla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When the world shut down in March 2019 my husband and I gathered with our neighbors in one another’s backyards for dinners and mental health checks. In an effort to support local businesses, we would regularly order take-out from restaurants in Lake Worth Beach.  As time went on we realized that Lake Worth Beach, an eclectic beach town, was missing a Sandwich Shop. Initially we joked with our neighbors about opening a Sandwich Shop and the type of sandwiches we were going to offer and what we would call them, such as a Hot Mess, Ham on Your Thigh and Redneck Cuban. After a few months of silly talk, we decided that we were going to make this idea really happen.

We decided we were going to open a Sub Shop, and we were going to offer the best DAMN subs in town. We located the perfect space to lease in the downtown arts district. We researched every existing Sub Shop we could find, taking notes about what we liked and didn’t like about each. We needed to stand out, be different than all the other great choices around Palm Beach County. Fresh cut meats and a variety of toppings were a must. The ingredients of each Signature Sub had to be original and tasty. The names had to make you smile, or even chuckle. Most important was that your visit to our Sub Shop had to be memorable. And this is how L-Dub Subs was born. (L-Dub is the slang nickname for Lake Worth Beach; “L” for the “Lake” and “Dub” short for “W” {Worth).

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I spent the last 17 years as a Major Account Manager with Office Depot. I was a leader amongst my peers and a stand out with my the companies I supported. As the world has become more digital, the need for traditional office supplies has dropped, yet my sales goals continued to rise. Success comes when you become the trusted business advisor; when your customer believes you are looking out for their best interest, when you can sell more and at the same time show savings to the customer. I was pretty good at this. At a corporate level – I believed it was important for my company to stand out and I initiated community involvement and volunteer opportunities.

I’ve used these same skills as a business owner in Lake Worth Beach, we have demonstrated how important it is to invest in our community. We support one of the elementary schools, one with a large student population considered homeless. Our back- to-school fundraiser was called CHIP IN; customers got a free bag of chips for dropping off school supplies; we donated paint for and helped paint the mural for the school Reading Room; we sold raffle tickets for a gift basket with the proceeds funding a program at the elementary school.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Lake Worth Beach is an eclectic beach town that I love to show off to friends and family when they come for a visit. First stop is Benny’s at the Beach – an iconic restaurant at the pier offering top notch seafood with views of the Atlantic ocean that can’t be beat. Each morning would start with a walk into town (1/2 mile from my 84 yr old home) to one of the locally owned coffee houses likeCommon Grounds or Monada Cafe or Joseph’s French bakery. A mid-day bike ride up the beach to Palm Beach would include many photo opportunities and some amazing window shopping on Worth Avenue. We would stroll thru our quirky downtown and admire the many murals created by local artists and pop into the local art galleries. Dinner, some nights, would be in our backyard, under our huge Lychee Nut Tree and then a walk downtown to any number of locations to listen to local live music. Other nights we would reserve a corner table at Rustico, or Victorias or Jewell Bistro, all locally owned restaurants, where the food is mouth watering. A visit to the Lake Worth Beach museum would be a must, as the history of this town is rich. A sunrise walk on the beach could be the climax of the week – it’s my favorite time of the day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Danny, has been by my side in this crazy journey. He’s the financial wizard to my creative talents. His initial involvement was just to be the supportive spouse but in the end he left his job as a Bond Trader and is now my chief Sub-artist at L-Dub Subs.
