We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcelo Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcelo, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did” That quote from Mark Twain (I writer and person I admire) has a great connection to reality. I think that, if we check our past decissions, choices and options, it is true that many of the most daring yet regarding are those we took out of our comfort zone.

This quote is like a “test” to many of my decissions today. I always project myself to the future and think “Will I be ok with this? Is this the only thing I can do about this particular issue?

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would refer to myself as a “creative” because sometimes I find it hard to make it in a definition. When travelling, for example, on borders, when they ask you about  “what you do” I write “Advertiser” and recently I completed the form with “Journalist” Those definitions clearly explain that being a creative person or an artist sometimes is difficult to express or admit or understand ,even for ourselves. I am proud of one of my (possible) weaknesses: Can not focus on one thing at the time and end up doing a thing and thinking on the next one and this might be because curiosity is always moving me, challenging my beliefs, my confort zone, I am always thinking on how it may be, how it works, how others can or could… consantly transforming my actions on a research for answers and a way to express those questions.

Writting, describing with words, should be the most distinctive act of my work, I find myself very “visual” and translating that into a story, the description of a place, a sensation, an inner feeling, in a paragraph has been always a major concern. It has not been and is not easy yet but once again the challenge moves me.

A couple of days ago I was telling my daughter, one of the lessons that took me a lot of time to learn: We should show to the “world”what we are, what we do, what we think makes as special, different or valuable (not matter on what field, what size or what for, that is up to you) I have spent many years waiting for others to discover and recognize my work and what I had to give. You have to pursue your dream but at the same time you should telle everybody “Hey, I am here and what I do is awesome”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have found myself on a couple of similar situations recently and ended up on the classical phrase “You should not miss…” and for me nowadays is Design District, because of the innovative design, art galleries, fashion and most of all for the creativity on the streets and buildings, On my list I always include Coral Gables and Coconut Grove wandering in a car under the trees admiring houses and corners and places around that trip should have a stop on Key Biscayne waiting for the day to end near the Lighthouse. The beach at 72st and strolling around the less crowded streets of North Beach gives me (I assume most of the people would not understand it jeje ) a feeling of being in a smaller place, in an another time experience, away from crowded businesses, gigantic buildings and unstoppable traffic.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Family. Definitively. Relationships are almost everything in our lives, they define what we will be and what we are, and when you have a strong bond, a solid backup that gives you support, encouragment, advise and most of all support again when things do not go well or as planned (what happens most of the time!) success (on any form it may take… and we can discuss what is “success”) is for sure on your way.
