We had the good fortune of connecting with Margaret Spokas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Margaret, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is to truly surround yourself with individuals who collaborate not who compete. Who you choose to allow into your circle personally and professionally will impact your level of success. Mindset and energy is influential and allowing positive and driven successful people into your circle will help propel you further and will motivate you to elevate your work and yourself.
I feel an immense sense of gratitude for the success and support I have been given throughout my life and in building my career. Who we are is a culmination of the experiences, moments, and people we encounter along the way; each lending a piece to take with us and impact us as we grow. And with it, many lessons and opportunities that test us, grow us, or even break us. One of the biggest lessons I am taking with me on my journey through life is whatever comes, let it come; what stays, let stay, and what goes, let it go.
One of my favorite pieces of advice is don’t be afraid to be silly, laugh out loud and live life without reserve. Trust me, it’s much more fun that way!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am the VP of Account Management for the Business Development department at the headquarters of a property restoration company. My career began in Marketing, and I loved it. I knew I had a passion for it, and I had the best time when I worked in that specific field. Working in Marketing allowed me to express myself creatively. However, as my career progressed, I found myself drawn to the business side of things. The art of building relationships, tracking revenue, and directly impacting lives resonated with me. While Marketing allowed me to tap into my creative spirit, Business Development offered me the opportunity to forge connections and see tangible results. The transition wasn’t without its share of challenges, especially in an industry where leadership positions were often held by individuals with extensive experience. As a younger leader, I faced hurdles in establishing my value and finding my footing.
One of the most defining moments in my journey was when I had to rescue a struggling department. Tenured employees had left, leaving a void that threatened to destabilize the team. Despite being relatively new to the department, I took on the responsibility of restoring order. I spent nights and weekends working tirelessly to rebuild a broken team. It was a pivotal time that tested not only my leadership skills but also my dedication to the organization’s success.
I also took some time to earn my MBA and as those who have done it, working while studying is not the easiest feat. That presented challenges with organization, routine, and discipline. Even though my time working toward my degree was challenging, I am happy that I accomplished my goal.
I am proud of the work that I’ve done and hope to inspire others as I continue to grow in my career.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a native Floridian, I love all things South Florida. We are surrounded by beauty and fun places to get away to for weekend trips or everyday fun. Across the three counties of Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach, I enjoy that you can always find something to do.
When in Miami, I am inevitably drawn to the water. Whether it’s basking under the sun on South Beach or strolling along the lively Lincoln Road, I’m always in awe of the sights and sounds around me. For nighttime activities, a trip to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts for a Broadway show is an absolute must. The juxtaposition of city life and coastal serenity in Miami is truly a remarkable combination.
Coral Gables holds a special place in my heart as one of my favorite cities in South Florida. The picturesque Miracle Mile is a charming haven that I love sharing with friends and family. Its timeless appeal and classic beauty transport you to another era, where each step is a stroll through history. In fact, my love for Coral Gables is so profound that I chose this very city to host my wedding reception—an experience that encapsulated both love and the city’s elegance.
If I’m taking a road trip up to West Palm, the iconic Breakers hotel is always a stop on my itinerary. A tour through the historic hotel is an experience itself. You are instantly immersed in its grandeur. You can also enjoy many of their restaurants, a day at the spa, or just the crashing of the waves against their beach. If you’re in the mood for a leisurely shopping spree, a visit to the Main Street nearby opens the door to charming local shops that beg to be explored. For a rooftop experience in Palm Beach, I highly recommend Restoration Hardware. It’s a beautiful locale with city views.
I’m also a big fan of pop-up events and am always searching for local venues hosting unique or seasonal activities. Noteworthy of this are the Pablo Picasso immersive experience at the Olympia Theater or the Light Up the Night events at the local zoos.
South Florida isn’t just a place—it’s a feeling. It’s the warmth of the sun on your skin, the peace of crashing waves, and the combination of cultures that blend to create a unique experience for all who visit and live here.
As a native, I’m not just familiar with its beauty; I’m immersed in it. Every corner, every beach, and every city street carry a story waiting to be explored.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To my husband and to my family. I am where I am in my life and career because of your unconditional love and support. Thank you, always.
