We had the good fortune of connecting with Margo Keck and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Margo, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have been a risk taker my whole life! Growing up in a small rural northeastern town, I started working at the age of thirteen. My family owned a restaurant, and it was there that I learned I had to work hard for what I wanted because no one was going to hand it to me. As I was working in hospitality and waitressing, I learned to treat others as I would want to be treated. In school, I did not fit the mold and knew that there was more for me out in the world! I was not a book learner—I learned by being hands-on! As soon as I graduated high school, I packed my bags and headed to Miami to pursue being DJ which then led me to becoming the first female DJ on the East Coast spinning 80/90’s Vinyl.
During that pursuit, I was diverted to North Palm Beach to visit my brother who was running a boat for Alan Jackson. It was there I fell in love with northern Palm Beach County and began my career spinning vinyl for clubs around town.
Years later, my passion became the Food and Beverage Industry working for corporate giants such as Marriott and Sheraton for a total of 20+ years. In over four years, I had the opportunity of taking a failing nightclub making only hundreds of thousands per year to earnings into the millions per year.
At 30, I was blessed to become pregnant and give birth to a baby girl named Hunter, who then changed my entire perspective on life and career.
As a single mom, I had the opportunity to move to Atlanta Georgia as a Corporate Food and Beverage Director. I once again took a chance to move to a state/town where I knew no one, but I went and established myself on the work scene. I traveled daily throughout Fulton County overseeing multiple restaurants and nightclubs and was home every night with my daughter. Hunter and my job were my only focus, and for over seven years, I was thriving and building a nest egg for me and my daughter. After years in Georgia, I then decided it was time to move back to where my heart was—North Palm Beach Florida!
During years of me taking time off from my career and raising my daughter full time, someone asked me randomly, “Who is Margo?” That question helped me think about the second half of my life and what I really wanted. That question changed my entire life again and catapulted me to where I am now at Margo Jeweler’s!
I took another risk and started Margo Jeweler’s in North Palm Beach after being surrounded by the jewelry industry all my life. At first, owning a business was extremely intimidating, but ever since I was 13, I have never turned away from a good challenge. I started my store on a marketing concept that I learned from the best. Guerrilla Marketing was a marketing tactic I knew from the inside out and put it to good use in the beginning stages of Margo Jeweler’s. I still follow and apply its principles today. For me, it is all about trust! If people trust you and know you have integrity and honesty, they will come back to you repeatedly! I was so thrilled and honored to win the esteemed 2023 Best of Florida Awards!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
It is all about trust and faith! My customers trust me and have faith in me, and I will never let them down! Margo Jeweler’s is a boutique of personal service and trust. From appraisals to repairs, to one-of-a-kind items to specialty made pieces, and even concierge services, I listen to and meet my customers’ needs and wants. If I cannot help them, I send them to someone who can, but they come back to me! I have enjoyed seeing several proposals on the floor of my store. I help soon-to-be engaged couples with the decision making about diamonds and settings. This past Christmas, a valued customer wanted a special engagement ring made to create his romantic get-away proposal, and he had a flight to catch with that ring! His proposal was riding on this custom job. I got it done in time for him to make his flight! Designing jewelry is all about creating memories and stories through enduring pieces and fostering trust and life-long relationships.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I live in North Palm Beach, if friends were visiting, I would take them to one of my favorite places: Safe Harbor Marina where my daughter works. I go with my mom to play bingo on the water. I also would take them to Hobo’s Gourmet Kitchen near my store for an amazing breakfast. I would make sure they met my favorite Realtor, John Kern, who would take them boating and fishing or golfing.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Recently, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and it has not been an easy road to navigate! I dedicate my shoutout to my mom and dad! My mom and dad have been there for me when I could not get out of bed or speak because of MS. I have endured two out-of-town treatment sessions which were lengthy, costly, and exhausting to travel to and from. My mom and dad were there and have always been there to help me even when I do not like to ask for help.
