We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria A. Petit and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria A., how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
The word balance already creates duality a seesaw between two options which must be “Equalised”. In this case work versus play and relaxation. It already implies that the two cannot co-exist. The biggest shift in my life after leaving the corporate world was burying this idea. Our culture is so conditioned to this polarity. I call it the “Happy Hour” syndrome as if you have to wait until “Happy” Hour before you can express your joy and this idea that it should be limited to a specific time of the day. How absurd is that? Everything I do brings me immense joy and satisfaction otherwise I don’t do it. I work with brands and companies I love and and only take on coaching clients I also enjoy spending my time with. It’s an evaluation process I encourage coaching clients who reach out to me to undertake. After an initial introduction 20 minute intake coaching session I invite them to evaluate whether it feels good for them to proceed being coached by me. I also ask myself the same. Does it feel good to proceed coaching this client? Would I look forward to coaching them? Can I be of service? Only if we are both excited to proceed do we continue with coaching sessions. I invite you to write your own rules and design a life where “Happy Hour” is every living moment. Take note of where you spend your time, with whom and what you spend it on? Where is your life energy flowing? Is it re-energizing you? Or is it wearing you down? As the saying goes, CHANGE what you can’t enjoy and ENJOY what you cannot change.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a certified Bulletproof© Human Potential Coach, helping clients to achieve their goals, realise their potential and upgrade their body, mind & energy. I work with clients in English, Spanish & Portuguese and many clients request coaching in the following areas:* Energy, Focus & Wellness * Goal Achievement * Career & LIFE Transitions* Weight Loss * Athletic Performance. I was the former Commercial Director for Motorola Ltd, Europe, Middle East & Africa reaching this position before my 30th birthday, I left totally burnt out in 2009. Although I always had a passion for fitness and wellness, I’m a IFPA Advanced Personal Trainer and AFFA Certified Group Exercise Instructor, I had a wake up call in 2008 after a sequence of exams determined my biological age at 61 years old?!! Stress, travel, crap meals on the go, sleep deprivation topped off with excessive exercise (at the time I was working 14+ hr days, training for the New York City Marathon, playing Polo and joking I was only home in London to do my laundry as I was travelling extensively) had taken a toll on my mind, body and soul. I left the corporate world for what I had “planned” as 1 year sabbatical but which ultimately kick started my life down a road of self discovery, minimalism and reconnecting with Nature.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Our first stop would be a day on any of South Florida’s glorious beaches. We are so blessed with our turquoise waters and wonderful warm weather. Followed by a fresh coconut water at any of the fresh juice havens sprinkled throughout Miami, although one of my favourites is Athens on Miami Beach, a local institution since 1942. This can only be followed up by take-away from Joe’s Stone Crabs which you can enjoy back on the beach! This perfect day would continue by relaxing into the evening at the Russian Turkish Baths in North Miami Beach another Miami institution, originally founded in New York in 1892 the place is open 365 days a year until midnight. I could easily PLAY & REPEAT this combination for entire week! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out to Erica Porter who I have know for 30+ years. She is someone who lives life to the fullest and embodies love for everything that she does! She is the owner of Myra & Company Day Spa in South Miami which was founded in 1979 by her mother Myra. The Salon which evolved into a full service Day Spa is a South Miami institution well known for the personalised and stellar service.
