We had the good fortune of connecting with Marian Marval and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marian, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
One of the principles that I value the most is willpower or self- effort. It was one of the greatest lessons from my parents: have a dream, but make it happen through discipline and willpower to achieve it. I think that during my life I have had to work with discipline, determination, and passion to achieve my goals and help others to conquer theirs as well. I believe if we are not focused or determined enough to put any effort in our dreams they will be only projects floating in the air. I think that we can be disciplined and happy trying to achieve our goals, but if we no succeed at the beginning, we can keep trying without any discouragement whatsoever.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a journalist and I have worked in several international media outlets in Miami, such as CNN en Español, Yahoo en Español, Telemundo, El Nuevo Herald, but after I began to practice yoga and buddhist meditation, I started to question myself about my professional career. After a while I decided to teach yoga and launch my online platform where I share my experiences as a yoga student and teacher. My website yogawithmarian.com is a reference for the Hispanic community about how the yoga practice can improve our lives and unveil us as better human beings. For me is an honor to have an engaged virtual community of students and readers from all world, countries like US, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, Ireland, UK, China, among others. One of my premise and major differences is that I understand when some people feel afraid or discouraged to practice yoga because I was of one them before. I remember that I didn’t like my first yoga class, I felt so lost and alone, it took me years to come back. As a yoga teacher, I always try to connect with my students from that understanding and compassionate approach. I know how is to feeling an outsider. I write about my experiences and how people can improve not only their yoga practice but also how they can live a more mindful life with the principles of yoga philosophy. One of my greatest accomplishments is working as a yoga expert for Telemundo channel and have a yoga segment in Spanish. Also, I am one of the writer contributors for the online platform Yoga International.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start going to the beach, well because everybody wants to go to the beach in Miami. But I would go to Crandon Park, in Key Biscayne, at very early morning when everything is quieter and less crowded. We can do paddle board and kayaking after we spend time lying under the sun. One of the best parks that I know is Kennedy Park, in Coconut Grove. We can spend time there surrounded by beautiful trees and the bay, while we can eat a great vegetarian burger from Lokal restaurant.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thanks my students and yogi friends who encouraged me to write about how the practice of yoga changed my life and transformed me into a more self-confident, understanding, and compassionate woman. My students and fellow yoga teachers believed in my ability to write and connect to my own self through writing. They believed in my online project, yogawithmarian.com and always pushed me to inspire others to practice yoga and live a healthier lifestyle.
