We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariana L. Boulton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariana L., what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
For many years I’ve disliked ‘practice makes perfect’ advice, and feel this is a very limiting notion to any talent. Perfection is unattainable, and this train of thought can honestly make you feel as an imposter, or paralyze any further improvement as our human nature constantly reveals our many flaws . If ever could you have attained this ‘perfection’ it would mean you’ve reached your ceiling and have no more room to improve, to grow and to learn.

I rather like ‘practice makes progress’ in the constant learning environment that is life. I believe in a constant stream of life lessons where the habit of practice definitely helps you progress improving your skills, mindset and ideas, and body. We are continuously molding into new versions of ourselves.

Whether consciously or unconsciously, the habit of practice usually will lead you to become a better version of yourself and layer upon layer you to become a masterpiece, yet are never perfect.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It all begins with an idea.

My name is Mariana Boulton. I am a wife, a mother of four, a friend, an educator by profession, and a creative artist by choice. I’m also a continuous learner, which has lead to watercolors.

I love art and design, I always have. I enjoy loosing myself in museums and art galleries or art festivals. One day, I decided to get more formal art classes through out my life by going to short classes in museums or you tube tutorials: First with oils, then acrylics, a little drawing here and there. Finally three years ago I was introduced to Watercolor and I was hooked!

Come into play the Covid-19 lock down and pandemic: I found myself having more and more time to play with the medium, to explore, to challenge myself and create. I found I loved getting lost in the process and it was, in a way, therapeutic, which helped me be a better mother (With four kids between the ages of 16-6, life can get a little hectic) Using technology such as as Instagram, it has enabled me to expand my audience much further than I ever thought possible. Through YOUTUBE I had the chance to find great tutorials to help me improve techniques and learn more about the medium (Lets make art and Domestika are my favorites! )

As with anything, I am still learning, practicing and progressing/evolving my style. I have had the opportunity to be exposed to many different countries and places in my life(e.g. Venezuela, Spain, Ireland and USA) exposing me to many different styles, people and cultures. From living in different places, teaching and being a mom I have a good understanding that ‘life is messy’, life is constantly changing and helping you evolve as well. With life you can grow bitter or better. I am always striving for the better version of me.

I like creating happy, fresh and simple works that remind us of the beauty in everyday. Beauty in the simple and sometimes ordinary things of life. I Want to inspire others to continue learning and teaching them love for being creative. it isn’t about having thousands of followers, it is about connecting and helping the ones you lead.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
oh fun! Well living in South Florida does have advantages…

Breakfast and coffee at some local coffee shops are a must, like Carmela and the little coffee shop.
A day at the beach is a must, Atlantic Ave, Lauderdale by the sea or Boca Raton Beaches are our family happy places
A day to visit Miami Wynnwood district and eat at a local restaurant as well as a Stop at the Perez Museum of art for an afternoon.
Viewing the Sunset with the Everglades either from Lox or Atlantic Ave lookouts. Hopefully spot a gator or two.
An evening bar hoping in Delray Beach, and maybe having dinner at Rocco’s Tacos.

A day to stroll through Morikami Japanese museum and Gardens.
and a day trip to Key Largo and spending the day in John Pennekamp State park. Maybe a trip on the glass bottom boat.

We can finalize their stay with a pool afternoon and BBQ hosted at home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
YES! of course. I have a couple of people I need to send a shout out to: My grandmother Yayita, for being the woman with most Grit and love of life I have ever met.
My mother Irene for the first watercolor set I received as a gift.
My loving husband and kids, who constantly believe in me, even when sometimes I don’t.
For my friends, that have my back and constantly encourage me with their support.
