We had the good fortune of connecting with Marlena Shepherd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marlena, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My business was born through my own healing journey. Having gone through significant traumatic events as a child, I spent about 10 collective years in talk therapy. I believe the therapy helped me to a certain extent, but what it didn’t do was help me release the trauma from my subconscious mind and physical body. Several years ago, my physical health was declining. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and was struggling with severe depression and anxiety.
As I searched for answers and for anything that could help me feel better, I began to learn about how unhealed trauma can manifest itself as physical disease. I also learned about the strong connection between childhood trauma and adult diagnoses of autoimmune disorders. I started putting the pieces together and learning how to help myself heal.
The first step was to fire my therapist and my psychiatrist, because they were not helping me to uncover the root cause of my symptoms. They were only putting a band-aid on it. The band-aid was in the form of multiple anti-depressants and anxiety medication, which were not helping, along with dredging up the past every week in my therapy sessions. This only left me feeling more hopeless.
The second step was to start working with a coach. My coach was giving me tools to actually work through, heal and release the trauma. She was giving me coping mechanisms for my daily life. She helped me reconnect to myself so that I could understand what was going on in my body, and how my emotions were impacting my physical health.
The more I learned about the tools I was using, the more I wanted to learn. This interest is what caused me to sign up for coaching courses and receive certifications. The further I got into my studies, the more passionate I became. It was becoming clear to me that this is what I was supposed to be doing with my life. Everything had come full-circle. I had heard people say before that your pain becomes your passion, and that’s exactly what was happening in my life. It became obvious that the reason I had gone through the things that I did as a child was so I could help others heal their own lives today.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is called Rose Colored Life. The premise behind the name is that everyone has heard the term “seeing life through rose-colored glasses”. I challenge that and ask, why just change the lenses when you can transform your whole life, from the inside out?
I am a Spiritual Mindset Coach, and my business is about helping people to reconnect to themselves on a deeper, more spiritual level. To heal from and release the past, along with any conditioning or limiting beliefs they picked up along the way. And lastly, to understand energy and the law of attraction so they can become powerful creators of their own lives, rather than living someone else’s dream, rules, and vision.
The thing that I am most proud of is that I built this business from the ground up. I completely changed careers, learned new skills, and dove right in. I created the website, the marketing, the visual tools, online courses- literally every aspect of my business. I am also proud of the work I’m doing because I see the difference it makes. When individuals begin to heal, this has an impact on their families. When families heal together, the community is impacted.
This journey has not been easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have grown so much by taking on this new role. Starting my business allowed me to peel back even more layers of my own healing that needed to be addressed. I learned firsthand how important mindset is in everything that we do. I also learned how healing it can be to step outside of your comfort zone.
I want the world to know that healing doesn’t have to be hard and scary. It doesn’t have to take 10 years sitting in a therapist’s office and hashing it all out, over and over again. It doesn’t have to involve pills to numb you. Sure, it’s not always going to be easy, but it does get easier with time. When you focus on moving forward and releasing the past, you will find freedom that you didn’t even know existed.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Miami Beach, Florida- such a beautiful place to live! Because of this, I have visitors often.
The first stop would be cocktails at the Broken Shaker, followed by dinner next door at 27.
The next day we would check out some art at the Bass Museum in Collins park, followed by a day at the beach.
The following day, I would take them over to Little Havana to experience the Cuban culture and look at even more art. We would eat at one of the many Cuban cafes there, stop by my favorite art gallery called Molina Fine Art, and end the day with a cocktail on the beautiful patio of Ball and Chain.
The following day would be spent exploring the city of Miami. We would stop at Wynwood Walls, lunch at Coyo Taco, and then head over to Allapattah to check out SuperBlue Art and the Rubell Museum. We would end the day with wine and cheese on the patio of Lagniappe, and then head over to Sweet Liberty in Miami Beach for some late-night dancing.
If there is enough time, I would also take them over to Key Biscayne for some paddle boarding and manatee sightings.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had many mentors on my personal journey. My first coach, Vanessa with Reading by Vanessa, was pivotal in helping me heal from trauma that I had been carrying with me my entire life. She guided me through inner child healing, taught me EFT Tapping, and helped me reconnect to my spiritual side. My current coach, Suki Eleuterio, has helped me navigate the mindset and energetic work it takes to be successful in my business. I am so grateful for her guidance and support.
The books I’ve read have informed my personal journey as well as my work, with the most impactful ones being:
You can heal your life by Louise Hay.
Ask and It is Given by Abraham-Hicks.
Super Attractor by Gabrielle Bernstein.
My family has been incredibly supportive of my journey. They have believed in me and my vision since day one, and didn’t even bat an eye when I resigned from my lucrative career of 15 years to focus solely on my business. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support.
