We had the good fortune of connecting with Maxx Millanova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maxx, what role has risk played in your life or career?

There is no success without risk. All great things involve taking a chance. In fact, I believe that is one of the secrets to a fulfilling life, and one fundamental concept that escapes a lot people. Taking risks involves confidence and trusting in the strength of your own wings to know you can soar. Even amidst failure, there’s the confidence that you can pick yourself back up again.

My whole career as a performing artist has been a string of risks. Each and every step. From expressing my innermost feelings, wounds, and frustrations through the music; to performing in front of strangers and large crowds hoping they’ll listen. To not shying away from opportunities even when I didn’t feel ready or well; trying new things musically, like incorporating playing keys into my performances, and making bold life changes and moves; particularly my move to Miami. Most recently I took the risk of publicly disclosing some of my health struggles while asking for support from my community to help me during this time, and to help fund these next two musical projects I have in the works. Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

I am an Emcee/Pianist/Performing Artist. I move crowds by engaging the art of rap while maneuvering through taboos and setting my heart free. I like to say the things most people may be afraid to say; shedding light on what hides in the dark. Being it social awareness issues, forgotten stories of the past, or things the world may have become numb to. Much of my music also reflects many of my own trials and tribulations, and my personal journey of growth.

Through my music I hope to inspire others, and to uplift the spirit of the community to succeed; especially during this time of adversity. I’m someone who’s been on a healing path through naturopathic/holistic medicines most of my life, so I’m very passionate about health and wellness; which also reflects in my music. I recently completed my master’s degree in Oriental Medicine, and my latest project available on my Bandcamp (maxxmillanova.bandcamp.com) is titled ‘AcuRap’, a modernized approach to ancient medical texts and esoteric tradition over dope beats.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I would definitely have to take them to the Museum of Graffiti in Wynwood. They’ve done an amazing job displaying the history and evolution of graffiti art, and the installations are an awesome site to see. I am also a fan of 1-800-Lucky in Wynwood for some dope food and dope beats. Every time I’ve been there, the vibe has been right.
