We had the good fortune of connecting with Meggie Cherilus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meggie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a creative career because the ordinary was so bland. Now pursuing an acting career didn’t just happen out of the blue. Let me elaborate, when people ask me how long have I been acting, I tell them my whole life. It’s true. Since I can remember I’ve had a camera in my face. My brothers and I dub our mom the “original Selfie Queen” because after my mom got the money shot of her kids on stage, she was notorious for turning that camcorder around to make sure the people know who’s behind the lens. In a sense I have to give credit to my parents for putting me in front of an audience at such a young age. From the church holiday programs, the morning announcements in elementary school and middle school, master of ceremonies, magnet programs for the performing arts; Ive always had a hunger for entertainment. I just decided as an adult that I wanted to play again, so I did.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an developing actor it’s hard to pinpoint one defining moment in your career that makes you feel like you’ve “made it” because as an actor you’re constantly trying to land your “big break” or you’re just trying to stay booked and busy. That’s the hard part, being satisfied with the work that you’ve done. Well, I’m never satisfied. I am a hard working woman that gets it done by any means necessary. One achievement I can proudly say I am most excited about is my original web series on YouTube “Mmm Spa” Home of Meggie’s Magical Massage. This is a passion project that I birth which is a satire comedy about the exaggerated truth behind massage therapy. I created this show after becoming a massage therapist and just observing how people act- which is surprisingly hilarious. 3 years later and over 1.4 million ORGANIC VIEWS I have now developed a second season of Mmm Spa, which will be released in 2023! Very excited about that one, it was truly a labor of love.
Getting to where I am now was not easy. I am the decent of two very proud Haitian parents who had different expectations for me. Doctor, lawyer, engineer- DAS IT!! Acting was never something that my parents saw as lucrative, it was a hobby in their eyes. So after that wonderful time spent in the Magnet Drama program in middle school, off to medicine I went- thinking I wanted to be a physical therapist or something lol. Between high school and college I spent 10 years of my life learning all things health sciences, got a degree and everything! But even when I was studying in the medical field, I KEPT PERFORMING. That was the compass that lead me to where I am today. I would do community theater, got back into church and joined the theater ministry, I would take performing arts electives in college. My spirit couldn’t let go of the stage no matter how much I told myself and others told me that it wasn’t sustainable. I just kept performing. After I did what I thought I was supposed to do, I did more. I kept performing, I found a manager, I let go of the ideal of becoming a physical therapist and became a massage therapist- I told myself it was a stepping stone to physical therapy but it wasn’t lol. I found a way to do something that would support my lifestyle and gave me the flexibility to pursue a professional acting career. Win win.
Some of the lessons I learned along the way is do what makes you happy. Seriously, life is too short to do something you hate day after day. Find the joy in your life and magnify it x10! Also, stop letting other people dictate your life choices. We only have one life to live and you can’t live it for your parents. Another lesson is keep going, keep creating, and keep playing. Never keep the inner child inside for too long, take her out and show her what’s it like to have grown up money.
I want the world to know about my passion for performing, watching me on the screen and in my element will definitely keep all your senses peeled and attention set on me with my witty facial expressions, authentic humor and dynamic acting skills that naturally demand the audience’s attention.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ok so boom- so wynwood is always a vibe, lunch at Grails, promenade down the streets to wynwood walls, and end it with dinner at KUSH and then drinks at Brick
Day two would definitely have to be a beach day. Start off with a trip to publix for a pub sub and snacks, get to the beach haulover or Ft. Lauderdale maybe finesse a jet ski ride or something, grab drinks at Fat Tuesdays and the head back home for a nap, then end the night at red rooster for dinner and dancing
Day 3 definitely need to chill a bit so spa day it is, The Standard Spa is the only place I’ll go for a much needed spa day, food, drinks, sunsets and you can’t forget about the massage.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My faith, family, friends and community are essential to my success. Without the grace of God I am nothing. Without the support of my family and close friends most of my projects would’ve never seen the light of day. I am eternally grateful for them. But if I had to shoutout one specific person it would have to be my drama teacher Mrs. Tanisha Cidel from Norland middle school. She was the spark that lit the match. She instilled so many fundamental values of the arts that I used to this day! If I have to be honest, everything I do regarding acting is to make her proud. She’s such an incredible person who’s touched the lives of some many young artists.
