We had the good fortune of connecting with Melinda DeSeta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melinda, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Sex is delicate. People place the intimacies of their sex life to my care. I am a Licensed Psychotherapist who helps individuals and couples live their best sex life. Sex is a crucial part of our relationships, and at the very least, sex helps us relax. I strive to honor all my clients as they come into my office and share the most vulnerable details. My profession also encompasses many judgmental risks. People sometimes place judgements on therapists who discuss and work with sex on a daily basis. To debunk a myth, sex therapists do not practice hands on techniques. My sessions are hands off and verbal. My goal is to help my clients gain communication techniques, confidence, and become aware of the pleasure path within themselves and others. My practice, Insight Counseling Center Miami, all began with a risk. When I was 22, I left my small hometown to move to Miami to experience the rich culture, the warmth, and the overall hustle of the city. Upon graduating from the University of Miami, I needed a job desperately. For two years, I worked as an intern making just enough money to get by. The day I was not able to pay my rent, I decided to open my own mental health practice. There was no room for failure.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
After working in private practice for four years, I realized that many people struggle with intimacy, vulnerability and sex. Having little training in human sexuality, from my masters program, I felt the need to continue my education and earn my Ph.D. in Human Sexuality. I am currently in the dissertation process, and may need therapy to get me through it! To help my clients from a wholistic perspective, I also offer hypnotherapy. Sometimes we are not sure why we are having painful feelings or maladaptive behaviors. Sometimes we need more than talk therapy to feel happier and adopt a healthier life. I offer an integrative approach between talk therapy and hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy allows the client to uncover the unconscious reasons that have been holding them back from reaching their goals. Clients are then able to develop new core beliefs and effective strategies to create lasting changes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To start the day, I’d take my friend for a walk/ run around South Point on Miami Beach. During the day we would hit the shops at Brickell City Center and then plan bites and drinks in the city. I love ambiance. So the culture and atmosphere of a restaurant is everything to me! My heart has always been in Brickell! I lived and worked in Brickell for many years, so that is where I would choose to dine! A few of my favorites are Cantina La Viente, Zuma, or Tacology. There are so many places I’d want them to experience! We would also have to find time to experience everything Wywood and Miami Beach has to offer.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my support system! Opening and growing a private practice is an emotional experience as much as developing a strategic business plan. My husband has always been my foundation. I fell back on him when I needed the confidence to overcome the challenges life threw at me. I’d also like to give a shoutout to the networking group Miami Mastermind. This group is filled with strong, supportive and entrepreneurial spirited health care professionals. When I need consultation on a client case, I had a support system to reach out too. I truly believe we are only as successful as the people we surround ourself with.
