We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Ronquillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
During our 11-year tenure in the landscaping business, we witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of iguanas on South Florida. These invasive creatures wreaked havoc on expensive landscaping by devouring foliage, while also causing structural damage through their burrowing activities. The health risks posed to children and pets, resulting from their defecation in and around swimming pools, were particularly concerning. However, the most alarming realization was the negative impact they were having on our ecosystem, posing a threat to native species. Motivated by these observations, we recognized the need to take action and established our specialized iguana removal business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We set ourselves apart from others in a unique way – have you seen our work truck? It’s literally an iguana on wheels! When we decided to start our iguana removal business, we wanted to make a statement. We envisioned our work truck replicating an iguana in every detail – from the texture of the skin to the spikes on the roof. Our vision became a reality!

What makes us most proud as a company is the tangible difference we are making. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that our work is helping our native species, as well as residents and business owners. Humane Iguana Control has reached its current success through hard work, building a loyal clientele, and networking with amazing individuals. We know that if it were easy, anyone could do it. But with determination, anything is possible. We continuously strive to improve our methods and have recently introduced a game-changing innovation: iguana burrow endoscopy. This technology allows us to efficiently inspect burrows without blindly digging and wasting time.

Along our journey, we have learned the importance of thorough research. Before starting our business, we delved into every aspect of iguanas – their behavior, diet, and biology. We also familiarized ourselves with the local laws and guidelines set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to ensure compliance.

We want to emphasize that this is a critical issue facing South Florida. Similar to how Burmese pythons are wreaking havoc in the Everglades, iguanas are also causing severe negative impacts in our area. With few natural predators, it is up to us to make a difference. While we understand that it is not the iguanas’ fault, we cannot simply look the other way. We want the world to recognize the urgency of this situation and work together to address it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a Miami native born and raised we would begin our day with a delicious breakfast at Islas Canaria’s. Their croquettas are truly incredible and a must-try. As someone who has always had a deep love for the ocean, we would then embark on a fishing excursion. On our way back, we would make sure to pause at Nixon Beach Sandbar, a fantastic spot to relax and cool off.

A trip to Miami wouldn’t be complete without stopping at Kennedy Park for a legendary lemonade from A.C.’s Icees. I have been going there since I was a young kid, This local favorite offers delicious and unique flavors that you can enjoy while taking in the beautiful waterfront views of Biscayne Bay. It’s a must-have refreshment that adds an authentic touch to your Miami experience.

For dinner, our top recommendation would be to visit “Hate Mondays Tavern.” They have truly mastered the art of BBQ, providing a unique and delectable twist to classic dishes. It’s an experience not to be missed, especially for BBQ enthusiasts.

On the remaining days of the visit, we would make sure to show them some of the hottest spots in Miami. One of our top recommendations is to visit the Miami Improv Comedy Club. It’s a great place to catch some hilarious stand-up performances and enjoy a night of laughter and entertainment.

We would also take them on a ride down 8th Street, also known as Calle Ocho. This vibrant street is filled with rich cultural heritage, amazing food, and lively music. You can explore the shops, indulge in delicious Cuban cuisine, and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere.

To truly experience the beauty of South Florida, we would take you on an airboat ride. This thrilling adventure will allow you to explore the scenic nature views, including the stunning Everglades. You’ll have the opportunity to see fascinating wildlife, lush vegetation, and experience the exhilaration of gliding across the water. It’s a memorable experience that showcases the natural wonders of the area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My children Mike Jr, Ethan, & Violet have been the driving force behind my motivation. It’s incredibly rewarding to demonstrate to them that with unwavering focus and hard work, anything is achievable. I want them to believe in the limitless possibilities that lie before them and to understand the importance of dedication and perseverance in pursuing their dreams.
