We had the good fortune of connecting with Mico Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mico, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I began to pursue an artistic and creative career because of how it shaped my entire lifestyle. one always asks, what do you want be when you grow up. and today I would respond aren’t we always growing up? Prior to this feeling, that question would replay and replay as I grew up as an inner-city kid in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Through it all I grew up as an outsider. Ironically Tulsa has pretty huge communities but still has that hometown feeling were everyone knows everyone. At least through my lens the majority of my life I felt well-known that I exsisted but internally i fell far from the crowd. Throughout highschool I moved almost every year, I had no idea how much it was preparing me for an even more challenging but beautiful transition. I love to illustrate everything that makes me who I am, Mico Hughes.  Before my artistry I had no sense of identity or major friend groups and that’s where it all began. And then there was music, On my home from work or anywhere I would sing my heart out. It got to a point where I felt like my favorite artists were my friends. In those moments late at night I would park a mile or so away from my house alone and perform songs like they were mine. That’s when instagram and other social media were starting to take off. Mainstream fashion and streetwear became my sense of Identity. I felt rebellious wearing clothing that no one else had or felt comfortable wearing. It became so Ironic and parallel to today. God has his way of pulling the people who belong to you around you. I started writing songs and performing them or freestyling by myself mainly. later on, in front of friends which I would’ve never thought I’d do in a million lifetimes. One day I was spontaneously driving around town with a friend listening to music because what else would we be doing right? We were on the way home and we see an artist we sort of mutually knew but never spoke walking in the middle of the night, crazy right? So I stop in the middle of the road to give him a ride instead of walking and he invites me to record a song at a local studio. It was like a calling, even without ever making a real finished song before this moment. I was estatic, the very next day was the start of a new life, a sense of identity to me. Once we put together our first ever recorded song, I released a summer vibe and it was considerably a pretty buzzing song for a debut. One month later, I moved to Florida which HUGELY changed my life again. I didn’t know anyone, have any connections to other artist or any person my age to call on. It was hell in the beginning. I was so shattered initially because I finally started making friendships through art. I had no clue how it would work out or if it would but I’m a pretty stubborn minded person (laughs). I just knew what I knew best which was sticking out like a sore thumb and going places where I had no business going. Today, modeling and expressing through the form of music is what’s taken the course for me.  Thankfully, there are superstar photographers and genuine friends more importanlty that I can reaching out to connect with. The entire state to me has felt like an entirely new world from home. In the form of photos this place has become my canvas for art. This is where creativeness grabbed my heart and it’s the one thing in life I can truly say I could never let go.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music has it’s different courses. I like to be as well-rounded as possible. What sets me apart from others is my ability to defy different genres. I love Alternative, Hip-hop, Rock, even country here and there. My favorite instrument is the guitar and that’s what brings all of my different influences together for what I like to compose. I’m most proud of the positive impact I’ve been able have on others. It brings the most joy for me to see people relate to the same experiances and emotions that I have. I’ve gotten to where I am today through perserverence that has been instilled in me. Throughout this entire creative process I knew that I had to give much more effort following my passion considering I started my creative journey In a totally different region. I overcame some of my early challenges by realizing I can turn my disadvantages into stregnths. When you do only what’s comfortable it can become your biggest deception. I learned stepping out into the world, being seperated from the pack has given me an entirely new outlook and perception of what life is truly about. I want the world to know that everything I will give is from my soul and I will remain a positive light.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best places in the city is where the culture is. The top place to eat is puerto sagua, nothing comes close that spot. The seafood, The gravy, The weather will take you on a complete power trip. Miami beach is the place to be when you want a vibe like no other. Next is the shopping atmosphere from the thriftwear all the way to upscale clothing stores on the strip. I’m an ocean drive kind of guy, I like the archetecture that the city brings, along with the beautiful women I cannot forget to mention. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
