We had the good fortune of connecting with Milena Mikić and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Milena, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I grew up in Serbia, and unconventionally in many ways. One is that I spent most of my early, formative years being raised by my father and grandfather at home, while my mom was working to provide for us. I would say I was surrounded and deeply influenced by men who taught me to build and create — always hanging with the boys, doing hands-on activities that fueled my creativity and teaching me to craft my own fun.

From a young age, I felt that pull toward creativity, which only intensified when I got my first computer at 14. I immersed myself in art and movies online and taught myself Photoshop, which all eventually led me to pursue my dreams here in America. I remember there was a bookstore back home, where I’d spend hours poring over artist books, envisioning my future filled with art and edgy creations — a dream that has now become reality!

In school, I studied under a professor who was a skilled and studied painter, where I learned the technical aspects of art. I remember being younger and disliking how certain pieces of mine would come out. He mentored me and taught the importance of technique over outcome — a lesson I’m now especially beginning to understand and appreciate.

For me, an artistic and creative career was a calling more than a choice. An integral part of my destiny that allows me to authentically express myself and contribute to the world in a meaningful way. I’m deeply grateful for the journey and influences that led me here.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart is my unique style of drawing, influenced by my admiration for artists like HR Giger. Back home, festivals would have drawing competitions and I would often win, getting tickets for all my friends. It felt surreal that something I really loved and enjoyed doing was validated and appreciated. I even ended up having some of my photography displayed at those same festivals. Each success fueled my passion further!

I’m most proud of being able to do what I love, on my own and in my own way. Winning at IronHack, with my unique background and establishing myself in design is definitely something I am extremely proud of. It hasn’t been an easy path, but my determination to carve my own way, take risks, and defy the norm has been key. I got to where I am by constantly learning, taking risks, and going against the grain. The rebel inside has really gotten me places.

Any opportunity to help others, I seize. I believe that what goes around, comes around. Through mentoring others and learning from mentors myself, I’ve always recognized the power of giving back and playing team.

Ultimately, I hope my work brings joy and serves as a genuine reflection of who I am. My art isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a heartfelt expression crafted with love and care. It’s my way of connecting with the world and leaving an impact that I’m proud of. My goal is always to enjoy the moment, and to have fun with everything I do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a fun week in Miami, here are my recommendations:
* Get on the boat and enjoy Biscayne Bay for a relaxing, beautiful day on the water.
* Experience Club SPACE, especially if you’ve never been! And definitely see if you can catch DJ Luke Hunter while you’re in town.
* Explore the Frost Museum or the SuperBlue exhibit.
* Eat, eat, and eat some more! Options in Miami are limitless, but here are a few faves: Shokudo, Midorie, Sushi Bay, Anacapri, Zucca, Chevre, Pura Vida, and of course you can’t miss the iconic Hot Fudge Sundae at Hillstone.
* Treat yourself to a spa day at Eden Roc, and bonus points if you’re there on a Saturday for their epic pool party.
* To balance out all that indulgence, I’d get over to RF Studios for Aerial Yoga or Tank Top Arms!
There’s endless options! But start here and see what else finds you. No matter what, you will always enjoy your time in Miami and have an unforgettable vacation.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Firstly, to my mom, who sparked my fascination with aliens and science fiction, fostering my curious spirit from an early age.

To Gina Tomasetti, who’s loved me unconditionally through many chapters of my life. She’s been my pillar of strength and support, always challenging me to express myself authentically, trust my instincts, and reminding me to have fun and stay true to myself. She also helped make it possible for me to attend IronHack — a decision that ultimately changed my life.

To IronHack, I am deeply thankful for the skills I acquired there and the doors that were opened. I won first place for the final project by creating an innovative recipe app for Purdue Farms. To Kat Alderman and Marc Kelly, who each took a chance on me right after my time at IronHack, jumpstarting my career and giving me a crucial start in the industry.

And finally, to my younger self. I left Serbia at 22 knowing very little English, with 300 euros in my pocket and a small suitcase. Looking back, I’m amazed by the determination and courage it took to do that, and I’m filled with gratitude that I did. Without taking that leap, I most literally wouldn’t be where I am today.
