We had the good fortune of connecting with Miriam Tischler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miriam, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
In owning your own business, there are never really on and off times. It is much harder to set boundaries with your own business versus working for someone else/a corporation at a standard 8am-5pm job. Since my sister and I are co-owners, oftentimes our personal conversations (those normal sister conversations) turn to business by the end of the call. Sometimes it gets exhausting that there are no set business hours and it’s often later at night that I am working on the juice bar since I still work a corporate job as my day job. With that said, I know it’s for good reason because we are working to build a juice bar empire and without hard work, that goal will never come to fruition.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My sister, Becca, and I had wanted to open a healthy fast food restaurant for years. It was something we had always talked about when we saw each other and dreamed about what it would be called and what the concept would be. It was over a decade in the making and finally a couple of years ago we decided to quit talking and start doing! We both jumped right in and started having weekly (well, daily) calls for hours to work on our business plan, concept, menu, etc. It was not easy to say the least. We had a number of challenges we faced such as the 3 hour time difference & I still work a full time corporate job so the hours I could work on the juice bar were limited. We overcame this by working nights & weekends and making and remaking our recipes a LOT of times. My neighbors certainly loved the menu making process because they got lots of treats delivered to their doors. I have learned that there isn’t another person I could do this with and trust with our business as with Becca. She runs the day to day, operations, etc. and does an absolutely incredible job. Not just that, but she is also the one who actually lives in Miami so all of the local items fall on her plate and she handles it all so well. We are not your average juice bar where you walk in & pick out just another green juice from the menu. We created a concept that takes a juice bar to the next level. We want you to feel like you get a bar experience, but all of our menu items are 0% ABV and 100% healthy. All of our menu items are named after rap songs and we even have a mocktails menu to go along with the concept. We also have a kids menu, dog menu & support as many other local businesses as we can (our honey, acai, wraps, tea, coffee, kombucha, wheatgrass & more are all from local Miami companies!) We love supporting our local community.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I don’t live in South Miami where the juice bar is located and work on the bar remotely. However, if I was to name my favorite spot in Miami, it would definitely be Key Biscayne. I am not a huge beach fan, but love Key Biscayne because it’s a much quieter spot than South Beach and is so nice to grab a juice & a book and relax there for a few hours.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family. Without my family’s support & encouragement, I wouldn’t be who I am today. No matter what path I have wanted to take in life, where I wanted to move, what I wanted to do, I have always had the support of my family. They have always been there to encourage me and push me to become my best self. To dive a bit deeper into family and specific to Ginger & Juice Bar, without Becca, my sister, bestie, partner in ‘crime’, smoothie sista, and business partner, Ginger & Juice bar would not be what it is today.
