We had the good fortune of connecting with Monika Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monika, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It all started with me helping one of my friends get ready for a pageant. I had never trained anyone and I wasn’t certified. I just had a huge passion for fitness. I had also competed in pageants and was doing body building competitions at the moment. As I was helping her, I realized that I would love to do this full time. It was then that I decided to get certified. I began getting clients that were also in the pageant world and I was helping them get competition ready. I quit my job and was committedto doing this fulltime. However, I was young and not really sure how to run a business. Things didn’t go as planned and I kinda just let it all go. I took a year off and that was one of teh darkest years of my life. I was very depressed. I was alwyas crying and founf myself very unsure of who I was. I saw myself as a failure. One of my client, turned friend, sat my down and opened my eyes to how good I am at my craft. How much I changed her life and so man others. Why would I stop doing that. So I started up again and I haven’t stopped since. I have taking many other certifications, currently enrolled in school again and taking a business class. I have learned so much since those days. I have become more confident in my skills. I have learned that it is ok to not always be perfect and have the right answer and most importantly I have learned to ask for help. I am not where I want to be with my business but I will certainly get there.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have struggled with eating my entire life. I was always in the modeling/ pageant industry. I was always the “fat” one. I was never thin enough, no matter what. I was constantly told I had to lose weight for this, get smaller hips, etc. I was NEVER happy with how I looked. I was constantly dieting and then binging, dierting and then binging.I would eat thing that I considered “bad” when noone was watching. In front of friends, I would never eat! When we would go to restaraunts, I would never eat! Until I became a trainer and I started learning more about the body. I stopped worrying so much about the way I looked and more about the way I felt and I finally began to have a good relationship with food and myself. I stopped feeling guilty about eating a burger, and I started eating whatever I wanted in front of whoever I wanted. I stopped looking at vegetables as I way to get me thin. Instead, I see them as something my body needs in order ot be healthy and function properly. When I began having this mentality, my entire world shifted. I saw results, I was happier and healthier. This is what I want for women, I want them to STOP having that horrible relationship with food that I used to have. That it was I created the SMART fat loss method. It is a five step method that includes weight training, learning how to deal with stress and having a better realtionship with food. This method gives women that freedom with food that we all long for. It gives them confidence and makes them strong all while losing weight, having clothes fit better, get tighter and leaner.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami has so many amazing places. I’d definetely take them to the beach because whats a trip to Miami without going to the beach. I’d love to heave them check out this cool spot called” Aguacate Sanctuary of Love” They offer yoga, you can feed the pigs and their food is delicious.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
