We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Searight and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monique, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process was I want to help others. I grew up in and out of the hospital starting at age 7. I was diagnosed with glomerulonephritis which is a kidney disease. I lost complete kidney function at 11 years old. I have had numerous surgeries, about 30 or more. My mom donated one of her kidneys to me when I was 12. She’s been my biggest supporter. I started Showing Others Unconditional Love to provide support to families with children and teens facing health challenges in the Tampa Bay Community. As someone that can relate, I want to be an inspiration to help them to not give up.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from the rest is that my life’s experience inspired me to help others. I feel like my pain has a purpose. I’m most proud of my upcoming book I’m getting published. My goal for my books is to have characters that relate to children and teens with health challenges being an inspiration. I’m where I am today because of the my family, friends, and supporters. I’m surrounded by amazing people. Honestly, yes and no. It was somewhat easy because the National Kidney Foundation helped and taught me a lot that has helped me to this day and my family, friends, and supporters help to spread the word. It was somewhat hard because there were times I would get sick and be in the hospital. We are small so it’s also hard getting the funding you need to succeed. I’ve learned that building professional relationships with local businesses are very important. I would love for everyone to know that my biggest goal in life to help as many children, teens, and families facing health challenges as possible. I’m also trying to start a program called Road To Success that helps teens with health challenges follow their dreams.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take my friends to Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, Game Time, Main Even, Ybor, Channel Side, Improv, and Paint With a Twist. I absolutely love thieve places. My favorite restaurants are Long Horn, Tibby’s, Crafty Crab, Bradley’s family restaurant, Bahama Breeze, and Kobe’s. My favorite bars in ybor are White lie, Lit, and Patio. This would be my idea of a fun and festive week with friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family. My mom, she’s been everything to me. She’s literally my heartbeat. She’s supportive, loving, caring, there through all my surgeries and recovery, and also donated a kidney to me. My siblings are always there for me. I’ve always felt like an outsider because of what I go through but they never treat as one. They are always there for me, helping me, and supporting me. My mom and sibling also helped me when I was doing home Hemodialysis. My SOUL family has helped my nonprofit become everything it is so far. I’m so thankful.
