Meet Nick Hughes | Chief Executive Officer & Physical Therapy Doctor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2013, Brad and I saw a massive need for a younger, tech-driven therapy company in the senior living space. This was by no means a novel idea, but we wanted to be a disrupting force in the arena by being a faster moving company and employing the best talent. Honestly, we always thought if we had the best therapy talent in the area and state, we would be successful.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others? What are you most proud of and excited about?
In the simplest of terms, Salus is the quintessential therapy and rehab partner for every Assisted Living Facility in Florida. What started in one location in St Petersburg has grown across the state.

What I am most proud of is the ability of Salus to adapt to the changing landscape of therapy and keep innovating. Every year, our reimbursement structure changes and we are able to keep working and growing. We firmly believe that the senior population was underserved which is why we bring the best and brightest talent to their communities to allow them to thrive. Salus was never, nor is it currently “easy” but we like the challenge. Serving our senior population has been an incredibly cathartic venture and we love it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man. Being from Buffalo NY, I never have a shortage of friends and family that want to come visit especially during the winter. I lived in St Petersburg for 10 years so for me, Central Ave and Beach Drive are always staples for new visitors. It never gets old having a drink in December overlooking the water at The Canopy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our success and growth is thanks to progressive operators and owners of Senior Living communities throughout the state. Salus has evolved over the years but when we first jumped into the arena, we still had some figuring out to do. Our early partners believed in our mantra and saw the potential. Monique Spruill, Donna Isabel and Dustin Isabell were three of the most influential figures who shaped what Salus is today.
