We had the good fortune of connecting with Nik Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nik, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Paying it forward is something that is important to me not just in my personal life, but also in my business. One way that I’ve done my part by helping in the community is by creating a space for new entrepreneurs and beauty business owners like myself to rent space for affordable prices here in Miami. As the price of real estate soars, it has become increasingly difficult for people to find beautiful spaces to rent at affordable prices. We have successfully maintained a space for new artist to come and rent without taking all of their profits. They can rent space daily, weekly, or monthly. It’s important for artist who are new to the area or new to their industry to be able to get experience in their craft without breaking their budget. Our worldly impact is that I proudly participate with the #paywithasmile movement. This is where I provide no cost brows to women with Alopecia or cancer who have completely lost their brow hair. I do this proudly and never ask for a cent in return, simply just the smile on their faces. The tears of joy in their eyes is simply payment enough. Eyebrows help to frame the face, it takes years off of our look, and the loss of them is very difficult for many to cope with. Initially we have them show us photos of what their brows looked like before, then we restore what they have lost. It helps to give them a small sense of who they saw themselves as before.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart in this industry is I don’t have a signature look, I don’t do cookie cutter brows. Every client that comes to me I listen to what it is that they want and I deliver that. Each client gets exactly what it is that they want, not necessarily what I want. Yes I am the artist and I have my own style of what I do. But it is very much a collaboration between the client, their skin, their bone structure, and my skillset.
I am most excited about the future. I know that sounds so cliche. But the PMU industry has evolved so much in the 5 years that I’ve been in business. I’m excited for new trends as well as seeing new ways to do old things. I’m excited to see how much things advance over the next 5 years.
Easy? You mean to tell me there’s an easy button? Ha! No it has not been easy I moved to Miami not knowing anyone. I left all my family and friends behind. Starting from scratch is never easy. I truly have a great support system. I have an amazing core group of friends and family who have cheered me on every step of the way and even volunteered to be my first clients. None of it has been easy. But I overcome the challenges by reminding myself that every day is a fresh start, another chance to get it right. I give myself grace, remind myself that no one is perfect. Practice doesn’t make perfect but it sure makes progress.
The lessons I’ve learned along the way are get it in writing, not everyone has your best interest at heart. Listen more than you speak when dealing with people. Because what they say and how they feel is most important in this industry. Make sure that you are managing expectations. That you and your clients are on the same page before you even begin to work on them. Be clear and concise in your words.
I want the world to know my why. , I started doing this because I had so little brow hair my entire life. Once I realized that my lack of brow hair wasn’t the norm it became a source of insecurity for me. I did everything to try to correct what I deemed as wrong. I was Bosleys second client at their New York office to receive eyebrow transplants. Yes, you read that right, I had hair follicles taken from my scalp and implanted into my brows. Years later I tattooed my eyebrows. Then a few more years later I was introduced to microblading and then microshading. I have officially done it all, so I understand the struggles. The joy that I felt when I finally had smudge proof brows was uncontainable. Man I felt unstoppable! High Brow Society will always strive to bring that same joy to others, in any service that we provide whether it’s brows, lips, areolas, eyeliner, scalp micropigmentation, facial services or teeth whitening. High Brow Society means a commitment to excellence by highly educated professionals in their respective fields, because every one deserves superior level of skill and care.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami is all about the vibes! She and I have a running list of places that we need to go when she comes. Top of the list is Tala Beach it has all of the South Beach vibes with Mediterranean dishes. The daybeds and sand of this outdoor oasis located in one of my favorite hotels, the 1hotel is a must see. Because it’s so close to my studio we have to stop by the Farmers Market in Mimo and shop around. I have to take her ice skating at The Basement. I love ice skating and she would never think to go ice skating in Miami. Next I’m a huge sports fan so I would have to take her to see the Heat and the Dolphins play because why not yell, sing and cheer our lungs out. Lastly, I love Miami sunsets so we would finish a day with some sunset meditation yoga on the beach with Andrea Mihalik because here in Miami we can do this all year long.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to my dad! He passed away almost 3 years ago. But he was an entrepreneur, as was his mother and father. But the drive and commitment that he had to customer service inspired me. He inspired me not only to chase after my dreams but to do it selflessly and with passion. Never about the money, the money follows your passion. Find something you are passionate about and you will never work a day in your life. Taking care of people and making a difference in their lives is my passion. Watching High Brow Society grow because of that is what I love.
