We had the good fortune of connecting with Oriel Ross McKinney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Oriel, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’m passionately and unapologetically committed to my success but I also understand that success is not linear and it is redefined as life progresses. Ebbs and flows are a part of the magic and I’ve learned to understand the seasonality of business and life. My brand The Small Biz Engine®, allows me to leverage my unique thoughts, showcase my abilities to navigate from inside other businesses, and speak to my passion of driving business forward. I would have to say, the most important factor is flexibility with focus. You have to marry the two for success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I did not intend to become a serial entrepreneur, but I did realize many years ago that I wanted to influence business. I realized the feeling I get from bright idea to conceptual development to execution to growth is indescribable. I’ve been in Business Consulting for some time. Over the years, we added other entities and most recently a restaurant. Each with unique challenges that span from market share, to visibility, to personnel. Overcoming challenges has really been about laying things out. Not to oversimplify matters but some ordeals are perception based and some are factual. Perception can be from fear, from assumption, or from experience. You have to get to the root causes. You have to filter the noise and get to the facts. When there is an issue, I am in full resolution mode. I ask my team several times in several different ways, what can be done? What I want conveyed about my brand is I believe in doing the inner work. The impetus for The Small Biz Engine is to work from the inside out, like an engine. My goal is to always drive toward better results. Work from a position of confidence supported by sound judgment, experience, and skill.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Enjoying the beauty of downtown Orlando, Lake Eola and Orlando Museum of Art.
