We had the good fortune of connecting with Odalys Quevedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Odalys, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My copywriting business came about because of my passion for writing. After I had my first child, I needed a creative outlet, so I started blogging. After a few years of blogging for fun, I thought, “How could I make money from writing?” So I started copywriting and fell in love with it. Every time I sit at the computer to work, I’m satiating my creative hunger while providing a service to help my clients succeed in their own businesses. Later, I joined forces with my husband, Luis Quevedo, and together we own Art Spark Design where we provide a full suite of branding, social media, and web design services. I also founded Virtual Mom Collective (VMC) with my dear friend Denise Castro, when she approached me about starting an online community for moms to help us connect during #thisnewnormal. And as someone who is passionate about meeting strong women, and learning more about them, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to co-create this genuine and warm community. Almost a year later, we are nearly 6,000 strong, and growing by the day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What keeps me moving is also what sets me apart from other copywriters. I come equipped with full knowledge and experience of creating a brand from creating my own. As a blogger, I had to learn how to write engaging content on my website and social media. Then, I had to rebrand myself into a professional business person. It required me to attend a lot of educational networking events, shake a lot of hands, and show up as my authentic myself, bringing all my skills to the table. This is how I have been able to build a business with limited financial means. Then, once I’d gotten my business up and running, I strengthened my image as a boss mom by joining forces with my husband to provide a more thorough, quality service to our clients. I built something myself to prove to myself that I could. With the VMC, what keeps us going and sets our community apart is that we want mothers and women to share their expertise – whether it’s in home-making, business prowess, or anything in-between – everyone has a voice and we want to hear it. And we don’t just want to hear about the good, we want to discuss the struggles, the laughs, the hardships, the hilarity, and the tears. We want to hear it all so we all feel less alone in mothering. One thing that all of my businesses and brands have in common is genuineness. I can confidently say that any business success I’ve experienced is because I always show up as my authentic self.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Miami is full of gems, but I would start with something relaxing. So, on day 1, I would take them for a walk around Coral Gables. It is by far my favorite city in the Miami area. The must-see spots in the Gables are: Book & Books, Coral Gables Museum, Colonnade Hotel, and shopping and dining on Miracle Mile. Days 2 and 3 would be dedicated to my two favorite museums in Downtown Miami – Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. Days 4 and 5 would be beach and water activity days. A stroll down Ocean Drive, followed by a dip in South Beach. Days 6 and 7 would be reserved for making new connections. Because connecting people with each other and with valuable resources is one of my passions, we would go to lunch, or dinner and drinks, with like-minded businesswomen and mothers from the Women for Success Non-Profit and Virtual Mom Collective. This week sounds so amazing, I might just have to spend my next vacation doing all of this.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to the Virtual Mom Collective (VMC) that helps me connect to like-minded moms. And the Founder of the VMC – and my dear friend – Denise Castro. Also, to the Women for Success Non-Profit for being an amazing resource and community that supports women in business (like me). Big thanks to the Advisory Board of Women for Success and the Founder Lauren Marsicano. Without these communities and strong boss women, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I can’t express my gratitude enough.
